Weekly Call Home November 19, 2015

For those in my reading audience that don’t know. This blog is my weekly “call home” in the digital world. Growing up, my grandmother would call us every Sunday at 4pm, to check up on the family. I don’t like telephones, never have – it wasn’t a good sound growing up – calls in the middle of the night with bad news happen more often when your parents are ministers of aging rural churches. An unexpected ringing phone still sets my heart racing.

So I type.

Spent last weekend cuddling with the puppy and watching tv – some digital broadcast, some Hulu, and some Sling TV. It was fun, I only have Netflix at home. Also did some random cooking. Hash Browns and Banana Fritters from scratch:

Even made two of the fritters into a S’more, for fun.

This week has been spent applying for jobs, doing a practice interview with a friend, pondering a professional haircut and preparing for the weekend. Tomorrow, I am volunteering at the ALAO conference in town, helping out the AV guy to make sure that all the presenters have what they need. Then I have events with friends all weekend. It is that time of year.

Dragon*Con. Most of this last week was taken up by being in Atlanta, Georgia at Dragon*Con. I had a spectacular time, attending eleven writing panels, getting Peter David and Alan Dean Foster to autograph books, listening to Tom Smith, going to parties… and yes, eating Alkaline. I took with me: almonds, romaine lettuce, snow peas, sesame basil crackers, barely ripe bananas and granny smith apples. For dinners I mostly at at a Japanese food court place that had a Delicious Soba Noodle Salad. Here and there, I had regular salads(Subway and Metro Diner). I was back on my full course(sans Enbrel) of drugs(Prednisone, Plaquenil, Arava, Naproxen) to get things back under control. I came home from the con feeling far better than when I had left, flares all gone and even my pesky cough has dissipated.

So I just posted about my flare over the weekend. It’s calmed down quite a bit now, but there’s still a little extra fluid there. Another day or two and it should be back to normal. Other than that, cravings and stress driving me a little bonkers, but I am recommitting myself to doing this, and getting healthy. All else, this week went fairly well, health and foodwise. I still haven’t started exercising, but, that may be coming, as I’ll be down to part-time soon, and might even have a normalized schedule of sorts.

I’m heading to Dragon Con in less than 24 hours. With me will be going almonds, organic sesame crackers, granny smith apples, bananas, sprouted grain tortillas, romaine lettuce, snow peas, celery, tuna (and miracle whip). I will be seeking out salads when I eat out, and will be drinking only water.

It has been a good week. Still no need for a shot, forgot my meds a couple times with no ill effects. I’m doing well and enjoying life. I was sick on Sunday, but that was either bad Salmon or stress, or too much melon, or all of the above. Who knows? I need to do better about buying produce in appropriate amounts, and then using it in a timely fashion. I only ate half the bananas before they turned disturbingly brown and I have far too much Romaine lettuce in the fridge. Also, I think I have a cucumber that has gone all soft and some tomatoes that I left too long. Time to clean out the fridge and try again. I’ve been craving peanut butter sandwiches lately. The banana/tahini/flat bread was good, but just not the same, might look into almond butter. Speaking of, need to buy almonds today, too. Found lots of yeast free bread at Raisin Rack this week, too. Men’s Bread(lots of extra seeds and some random nutrient they said men need) and Spelt.

As previous comments mention, I have now gone over three weeks without a shot. I’m feeling quite good, and should really call my doctor to see when I can get in to talk to her about my blood tests. Retail schedule making that even more difficult a problem. The apples and bananas have gone over well. Giving me a little break from simply veggies. Slicing up the bananas on whole grain flat bread with tahini over them makes an excellent, if not very alkaline snack. I need to get more yeast-free alkaline grain bread in the morning if Raisin Rack has some. Got frozen veggies, too, but have eaten them all already. The smaller cuts make prep easier, if not fresh and raw. Things are going quite well and I’m finding myself having a much happier week. Parties are still painful, with all the lovely acid lying around, but I resisted this weekend. Time to start planning Anniversary Zagging. 😉

An interesting week. I had my birthday last Friday, so I zagged wonderfully. Had watermelon for breakfast, a whole half of a watermelon. Apparently that was a bit too much fresh fruit, as my stomach became unhappy fairly quickly. But recovered in time for Lunch at Red Lobster. Lots of Cheddar Bay Biscuits, a nice House Salad with French dressing, a Maple Glazed Grilled Chicken Breast, Vegetables and Baked Potato, as well as Raspberry Lemonade. Delicious! Then we went to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Too full from lunch for Movie snacks. It was a good movie, I thought. Then home to homemade meaty and cheesy pizza and strawberry gelato a la Zack. Both were Very tasty, but my tummy is normally unhappy with dairy, so I didn’t eat a Whole lot of either. Then off to CJ’s for drinks, s’mores, lime tortilla chips and hot tubbing. It was a fairly quiet affair, very nice and relaxing.

Saturday morning I ate a good chunk of Zach’s Irish Soda Bread with soy butter. MMmmmm yum! Then spent the day and night with Rich. A very lovely rainy Saturday. Sunday Mike and I went to Cedar Point, where I had Two Salads, and part of a chocolate covered frozen banana. And I believe I now have ridden every ride in the park. Yes, he even got me on both sides of the Power Tower. Then we went to Outback for dinner and I had salad, salmon and veggies, but also about a loaf and a half of bread and butter.

Monday and Tuesday were stressful, but alkaline, and today I’m thinking about making a few changes to my diet for sanity’s sake. I want to keep doing this, but some frustrations are pushing me to the breaking point. Apples and Bananas I think at the least. I’m tossing around the idea of more flat bread, without worrying about sprouted grain or alkaline grain so much, pitas and tortillas. Simple foods, not heavily processed things. Not looking to go back to junk food, fast food, sugar, dairy and all that stuff. But I need to find a better balance for myself.
