I had a great time last weekend with my Barfleet family. Four days and four nights of camping, delicious food, fun games, silly stories, campfires, singing with guitar and banjos, and 90 minutes of solid, straight, echoing laughter. It was glorious, and the rain stayed mostly away, though we starting wishing it wouldn’t as summer came in and sat heavily upon us. Already looking forward to our fall camp out.

I finished the second book of Night Angel, but now I’m waiting my turn for the last. In the meantime, I’ve been listening to a lot of TedTalks, and some more scifi. Last week was some Bradbury and Wells. I’m trying to decide what to spend my current Audible credit for. Maybe another Salvatore, I’m getting further and further behind.

But onto the big news of the week. I started my new job! I had orientation on Monday and learned all the details of benefits and the employee systems. Tuesday and Wednesday I learned all the things about my job. How to check books in, how to shelve and clean up shelves, where all the things belong, how to find and process reservations, and how to use Polaris and email. This week I start working on my own a bit, and learning the minutiae. Saturday we (CML) kick off our Summer Reading Program – and it’s not just for kids, everyone can participate and enter the prize drawings. So, head down to your local branch on Saturday and sign up. 🙂

My last day at Safelite today. All the weird. Computer wasn’t verifying insurance, and several complicated calls in the afternoon. No word from supervisors this week, more storms keeping everyone busy. Ah well. Looking forward to starting at the library next week. On-boarding on Monday, opening and closing with my new manager on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Next weekend is Camping! with 125 of my Barfleet friends. I have more dogtags to type up this weekend. It’s going to be a really fun time. Lots of campfire and castiron cooking. 🙂 And s’mores. Plus silly games.

Finished Way of the Shadows and now I’m onto Shadow’s Edge. Good series.

I had a really good time at MarCon with friends this past weekend. Some tasty beverages, as usual, from the bar – even the premixes were delicious (maybe a little Too delicious…). Some very good food from both the hotel and Max & Erma’s. I visited the Art Show and the Dealers Room. All full of fun and crazy things. I even bought a new book, though I resisted buying any art – I really am bad at decorating with what I have already. I also played some games, both at the parties, and in the official gaming area – my first time ever playing a miniatures game – Star Wars Attack Wing, I believe – and I didn’t do too poorly at it, either. I did manage to be too responsible/helpful, and got promoted on Friday night, but my friends took good care of me/celebrated with me.

And the week just got better and better. On Monday, I was asked to do some further paperwork for an interview I’d had. Then, on Wednesday, I was offered, and accepted a new job from the Whitehall branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library – Just up the road from me, and half a block from where I had my internship this fall. I start on the 23rd. So very excited!! (Submitted resignation letter to current job today.) It’s part time, so I can keep cataloging for Sprawl Library, while I get my feet wet learning the CML’s systems. Also, looking forward to being back on my feet and moving around on the job again.

I’ve finished the set of Heinlein I was working on, so now I’m listening to the first book in Brent Week’s Night Angel trilogy – thieves and assassins, my kind of book. 🙂

On a more political note, a post came across my Facebook yesterday that I think is very important: More Than 100 Methodist Ministers Defy Church Rules, Come Out as LGBT. Having grown up in the UMC, I feel that it is high time we remember that God is Love.

Had a nice quiet weekend full of snow. My car was being obnoxious, and the first shop I took it to could find no problems. Fortunately, the shop I took it to today found the hole in my tire and fixed it up for me. More applications sent off this week.

Finished listening to As You Wish, by Cary Elwes. Awesome book, I really want to watch Princess Bride again soon, now that I have a lot more background on the making of. Starting into Kevin Smith’s biography today.

Finished digitizing through the Deaths section of the Ohio State Journal Index this week. That’ll be a big help to Ohio genealogists. 🙂

Fun with friends this weekend, including our February Fleet party. Looking forward to it.

Discovered this week that I did not get the job I was waiting to hear from, when I checked the status on their site. So two more applications out, and a lot more searching has been done. I did hear from my advisor that my internship evaluation is complete and I’m all set to graduate, so that’s excellent.

I also got a haircut: Haircut

I spent two afternoons this week learning. I took two OhioNet Webinars. The first an introduction to MARC records, and the second, an introduction to the differences that RDA brought in comparison to the old AACR2 model. Both were very well done, and informative. I think my notes were as long as the PDF of the presentation. I didn’t get into cataloging classes, so I’m making up for it on my own.

Starbase Indy was a very fun con over the weekend. Mostly spent with my Barfleet family. There was some wandering about a dealers room and an auction, with occasional peeks into panels. We, of course, also watched the UM vs OSU football game in the Lounge. Not as fun for me as it was for the rest of my friends. 😉

A relaxing weekend ahead, and lots more job applications to come, and hopefully some interviews.

Fall Equinox earlier this week, officially time for all the pretty leaves. Looking forward to a beautiful Autumn.

Had a good party with Fleet friends last weekend. This weekend is for the relaxing. I also did a Lot of Cleaning after the fleet party. Finally shredded or filed all the papers that have been piling up since I moved in here over two years ago. My office looks so nice and clean now.

Week four at the internships, all the details will be posted in their respective blogs tomorrow, but I did a lot of good work this week at Otterbein, and got a ton of pictures, letters, and historical documents uploaded at CML.

This was also my first week of the CSA. New Century CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) brought my first batch of fresh produce Wednesday morning – in time for me to get to work by 9am no less. I got a cantalope, a seedless watermelon, a head of red and green lettuce, a zuccini, a head of garlic, a small bag of sweet potatoes, and one of white potatoes, a butternut squash and an acorn squash. I’ve eaten half the watermelon and a handful of smaller white potatoes so far. Very tasty!  I have to look up recipes for the squash, but I’m going to have a bunch of the lettuce tonight with dinner.

Internships still going well, though my posts last week were a few days late, due to busy and tired. Finally got the Annual Reports caught up, and now on to more items for the African American collection.

Received my welcome email from the CSA today. They changed my delivery day to Wednesdays. This Could be problem. They suggest leaving a cooler with ice in front of your house for the delivery, but I live in an apartment building. Originally, the delivery day was Friday, which is my day off. Hoping I’m early in the route, and can just head to work after they arrive. We shall see, first delivery is next week.

Fleet party this weekend. Looking forward to relaxing with friends. Haven’t had a local event since the early Summer picnic. Also a wedding shower to attend on Saturday. A day full of friends and chosen family.

Missed gaming this week, trying to fight off ConCrud before the weekend. Last week we made new 5th Ed characters, first time with the newest edition of D&D, to use when our GM is absent. Seems good so far. I need to flesh her out a bit. Regular game is going really well, my character is having a lot of fun. I’m slowly working on my gaming blog, getting his adventures online. It is hard to catch up when you’ve been playing for six months without blogging any of it.

Well, it’s not really summer yet, but looking forward to a fun weekend with my fleet family. Going to be a great time. 🙂

They actually fixed my mailbox this week, so I have a key that works, and a mailbox only I can get into, first time since August 2013. 🙂

Two rejections for Fall internships, and a lot of silence. Hoping for better news after the holiday weekend.

Finished Dragon Princess, now reading Dragon Thief. Really enjoying the silliness.

Busy, Awesome Life September 19, 2013

Schedule set for events for the next three months. It’s going to be a fun, busy ride. And I get to pet-sit three weekends, go camping, go to Cleveland three times, Detroit once, and have a great time here in Columbus. I might even make it to the Ren Faire for closing weekend. 🙂 So much to do, so much fun to have. And so much schoolwork to fit in.

The group project is steaming along. I did a major edit to one of the pages today. And we’re getting closer to having a cover page for web 2.0 done. If I get done with all the writing I need to do today, I’ll put up some more of the graphics that were donated to the project. My first paper is the biggest bit of homework left for the week: a “paper that discusses the information agency’s role in a future where technology will drive knowledge and information.”  I admit, I had to Google ‘information agency’ to figure out he was talking about libraries, museums, archives and galleries. But that should be a fun paper to write as the focus of both my classes has mostly been on that topic. My interest is starting to wander towards information systems a bit more than preservation – I mean, I like preservation of Things, but access seems like a more intriguing problem to work on. We’ll see how things go.

I did not get the library job that I interviewed for a couple weeks ago. But right now I’m so busy, I’ve only managed to apply to one other library job, and that because it came across the list-serv for school. But there’s a Career Fair thing at the Columbus campus October 3rd that I’ve registered to go to. So, maybe that will help. Scholarships have finally opened up for application. Those are due mid-October, so another thing for me to get in gear and work on.  Work at the store continues apace, headlong for the holidays. Weeee!
