Today was my Last Day at Barnes & Noble. It’s been a good run, nearly 13 years with the company. I learned a lot, had tons of fun, and met a lot of great people. Not all of it was smiles and rainbows, but that’s life. I’m glad to have worked there over the years, and now it is time to move on.

I start my internships next week. Monday at Otterbein’s Courtright Memorial Library, and Wednesday with Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Local History & Genealogy department. I am really looking forward to both of those, and the wide variety of new experiences that will come with them.

A quiet weekend ahead. To rest, relax, and get ready for Monday. 🙂

October has brought the cold nights, and this weekend, cold days. Which will not be so great for camping, though the rain will be the worse part. Ah well, fun with friends, and campfires.

Classes are still keeping me crazy busy. Next week I’m in charge of the project assignment, so that should be extra fun. All seem to be going pretty well, just have to keep up. Metadata in both classes this week, so at least it coordinates a bit.

Things are stabilizing at work. Unfortunately, this means me going back to appropriate number of hours (25) instead of working 30-40 a week. Change-over actually went really well this week, so that’s good. Still looking for seasonal hires. (And yes, still looking for a library job.)

Soon, it will be Halloween!

I have two digital collections to create this semester. Tonight, I’m taking pictures for my pewter collection. Soon, I will need old photos for my group project collection. So, if anyone (Mom?) has pictures of couples(wedding photos, ect.)  from before 1945 they would be willing to share with me (physically or digitally), I would really appreciate it.  It would be super helpful if you had information about the people in the photo, too. 😉

Had a great weekend with friends. Hanging out, relaxing, eating tasty food at Buca di Beppo. This weekend will be quieter and filled with homework. But still a Friday with friends in the plans.

Work is still work. We’re getting our lead positions filled. Still managers short, and of course seasonal hiring soon. Still looking at libraries, waiting for replies to applications. All sorts of fun.

Weather is turning colder, must be nearly fall. Heard a lovely commercial this morning about the leaves in Michigan. Will have to hit the bio reserve soon. 🙂

Didn’t use a planner for my summer classes, but had to break down and get one for the fall semester. I was just getting confused because my classes are so similar. It’s all in the book now, and sorted out. Lots of work to do, and one very unfortunately timed final project. But, it should work out alright. The other final project is timed excellently, giving me two weeks with nothing but it to work on, owing to the fact that the class ends the week after Thanksgiving. The projects for both look pretty awesome, so it should be good.

Pharmacy frustrations galore. I know it’s my fault for not ordering refills ahead of time, but three days running they keep telling me “maybe we’ll have it tomorrow.” Though today’s added bonus was being confusing and telling me they were going to call my doctor, as though to switch my script to something else. No, thanks, I don’t want something else, I want the drugs that I’m taking and that are working. I don’t care if you have to call another distributor, that’s not my business, do what you have to do, just get the medications, or I’ll go somewhere else, thank you. So, I haven’t had my meds all week other than Naproxen. I slept for four hours when I got home yesterday, was up for about four, and then slept hard all night.

Anybody need a job? Anybody that will actually show up and not quit after a couple weeks? We’ve got a lot of positions open if you’re willing to work retail with cafe. Manager on down. Full and part time. And soon, we’ll be doing seasonal hiring, too. Wee fun.  On a related note, anyone need a half-way-through-my-degree librarian? 😉

Cold and ice and snow and more cold. Yay winter. 😉   Except that it makes me want to hibernate. Which I’ve let myself do a lot in this month off from school. Lots of movies and reading and playing Flow Colors. Classes start Monday, though, so back to the busy.

Applied to four new library jobs last week. People are freaking out that B&N is planning to close 20 stores a year for the next decade, or so the internets say. There are 7 B&Ns in Columbus, it seems the market’s a bit over-saturated to me, but what do I know about business.

Trying to make healthier foods, and still satiate my need for warm foods this winter. I made chili last week, but next time I need to make it spicier. Made penne and artichoke hearts today. It was quite tasty. Mixed together all the nuts and seeds I had to make my own trail mix. I must be spoiled by cheap tuna, I didn’t really like the albacore white I got the other day. More experimenting to come.

DeCon coming up next weekend. 🙂

Today is the start to a very busy weekend. Three parties in a row, ending in Detroit on Saturday with a lot of the same folk I partied with last weekend in Cleveland. That was a great party, and this weekend should be just as fun (maybe warmer?).

I registered for Spring classes this week – two cores and one workshop. Access to Information, Organization of Information and Database Driven Websites. I also filled out my Program Statement form with my intended classes for the rest of my degree. We shall see how well that works out. Most of the classes I wanted to take were Spring semester only, so I had to get creative. Dr Boon was a great help in sorting things out.

Waiting on my professor to post end of project peer review instructions, so I can finalize my Tech class. Foundations is going along smoothly. I have a topic for my big assignment, and know where I’m doing the first two, just have to get to work on them when things are a bit calmer next week.

Haven’t met the new manager at work yet, but we have brought a good bunch of new folk in for the holidays. Hopefully, it will be enough, though I think they’ve got a few more offers to make as well. Seasonal music sellers are coming back soon, too. Yay! Still looking at libraries, but not getting much, yet.

I barely remember this past weekend. I think there was football on TV, and a puppy, and homework, lots of homework. Lots of video lectures on Monday and reading on Sunday. And posting and replying, and evaluating websites.

I also finished re-reading Ender’s Game Monday night after homework was all done. Now I’m reading the Elminster Ascending triology, since I’ve never actually read any books about him. And Tuesday we finished off Carnegie in our short adventure before we begin our Undermountain Goblin campaign. Up late last night formatting citations on a website.

Work is getting even crazier – anyone need a holiday job and a discount on toys, games, cds, dvds and books this holiday season?

This weekend is a break – camping Friday night through Sunday afternoon. And then back to the crazy. 🙂

Labor Day weekend. And I did a lot of labor. Worked Saturday, did all my Tools homework on Sunday and my Tech homework on Monday. I have a lot of reading to do for my Tech test next week, so have been doing that throughout the week and will do a lot more of it the next couple days. Kickstarted the Tech group project by volunteering to set up the website, and started getting folk to volunteer(or is that be voluntold) to lead the different weekly projects. Still waiting on a lot of confirmations, but there’s a site to put next week’s homework results on, so I’m content for now. Tomorrow is the only scheduled online time of the semester – a synchronous collaboration chat with about 1/3 my Tools class. Unless, that is, everyone else has waited for the third session, in which case it could be quite the big chat.

Work is going along as usual. I’m generally stuck in Music three days a week, now. My GM just now realized that today. Training the new kids bit by bit. I’m holding steady at 30hrs a week these days. We’re set for Halloween, but soon enough, we’ll switch to holiday rush.

A friend of mine found one of these at a garage sale and got it for me:

https://hydy.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/2ee42-img_0353.jpg

It’s completely manual, so I have to strengthen my hands/wrists up some before I can use it properly. But it’s fun to play with.

I also got out to Half Price Books this past weekend for their Labor Day sale, and got two books: Elminster Ascending, and Variable Star, as well as five movies including The Mummy triology, Which I then confused people by quoting the line about being a Librarian. No, I don’t have a library job yet, it’s just an adorable line.

As I type this, I am still waiting on AT&T to show up with my modem. Switching internet services with this move has been a nightmare. I’m about ready to give up on AT&T and see what else is available here, though I don’t really want to go back to Insight/Time Warner, either, given they were the other half of the nightmare. (Edit: AT&T did show up (his previous job today was 4.5 hours in the basement of Children’s Hospital). Unfortunately, the internet does not reach my connection. I have a modem, and the signal goes out 966 feet, but then it stops. So, he has to put in a ticket with someone else to make the internet get all the way to me. Once they do that, I’m all set.)
My birthday was yesterday, and I’ve had minimal access to Facebook, and my personal gmail account, and nothing else, because that’s all my phone can do. I did have a lovely steak dinner at Outback last night, and got to see friends for a bit, after the four hours of staring out my window for a van that did not come. I had a great time at Cedar Point on Monday, even though it rained, and I only got to ride half the rides I wanted to. This did include the newest coaster, so I count that as a success.
Except for the internet and some insect issues, I’m really liking my new apartment. Here are some pictures…

Kitchen photos will be forthcoming when the bug issues are solved.

Work continues to give me hours as people continue to quit, soon others will be going back to school (either as students or as their main job), so I imagine hours will keep up through to the holiday season. Again, if anyone needs a job, we have many positions available, including a couple lead positions. If you go to the website and see that we’re hiring a store manager, that is a lie, but because we are a training store, we do the interviewing and training for managers of other stores.
Once I get this move all sorted out, and the other apartment cleaned and turned back over, I’ll be checking out the two libraries closest to me: Bexley and CML’s Livingston branch. I really should also go check out the State of Ohio library, in case I ever need it for school, since it is my local campus.
Just over four weeks til grad school starts. Exciting times.

July Celebrations July 11, 2013

4th of July went nicely. Had some good cookouts with friends and family, despite the rain and grey skies. Had a good weekend with the pet-sitting. And a nice visit with my brother’s family. We Skyped with my parents, to wish Dad a Happy Birthday. Mostly, the kids made faces at the screen while we tried to talk around them. 😉

Packing is going along slowly, but surely as I sort everything out. I almost have the AT&T Uverse situation sorted out, we’ll see if my modem shows up or not, then I have to sort out installation. Apparently, they think they Do have to come and do some wiring, but they’re only available to do so during the hours that I work. Yay, fun. So, I might be sans internet for a few days, depending on work schedules.

Changes continue apace at work, as we try to sort things out back to workable. With so many people coming and going, things have gotten a little out of hand. But we’re bringing it back in. On a similar note if anyone has aspirations of working at B&N, let me know, we’ve got a good handful of openings, including a few lead-type positions. Nook HD/+ prices are staying low, so if you want a cheap tablet, with access to Google Play, come on out for that, too. They’re really nice little(and not so little) devices.

Another weekend with friends ahead, and then a weekend of moving, and a week of birthday celebrations. July is a busy, busy month.
