Getting Cold October 11, 2012

I had to defrost my car yesterday morning and turn on the heat in the apartment this weekend. Autumn is definitely settling in here in Ohio. Trees are all pretty colors and the stores are full of Halloween candy. Makes my stress-eating of chocolate a bit cheaper for a few weeks at least. 😉 I should really stop it, I know, but… it’s chocolate.

Got a good yearly review at work, and my yearly raise. Rich is still in the hunt, checking out new opportunities daily. We’re interviewing for our seasonal hires. Lots of interviews, not sure how many we’re going to take. Hopefully some in cafe, that’s been a bit of a problem keeping staffed lately. Been getting a decent amount of interest in the HD devices. Folks, if you love your local B&N store, go put your name down for an HD device (no obligation to buy) or two so we can be properly stocked for the holiday season.

The car accident claim should be settled by the end of the week as well. I just have to get the offer papers in the mail and get them back to Nationwide. Then that will be done. Looking forward to one less thing on my plate. And, if we’re lucky, one less medical bill by the end of this month, too. Then I just have to track down the big one that’s left out there in the ether.

Oh, and healthy food of the week: Miso Soup.

Sorry about not posting last week, things were just so busy and exhausting. Rich got laid off and is back in the job search. I do believe he has an interview this afternoon, and has applied for many things. Perhaps this will lead him into new and better things.

On my side of things, this is my down week at work, only 24 hours, before I gear back up for long weeks through the holiday season. Our new hires are all doing fairly well, and we’re getting ready for the batch of seasonal hires to come in, too. Apparently, B&N is getting rid of part timers’ benefits entirely, fully effective end of next year for those who still had them the beginning of this year.

On a happier note, we’ve once again got new devices this holiday season. The nook HD and HD+. The latter being a 9″ screen as opposed to our usual 7″ screens. With user profiles, scrapbooking, and nook Video coming soon, it should be a pretty cool holiday season for nook shoppers.  I was happy to see that they finally created free library apps for the Color and Tablet devices, so that folk could download library books straight to the nook, without having to go through the computer. Mom says she got it to work no problems. 🙂

Several parties and fun times with friends lately. Uncle David and many friends had birthdays this week. So Happy Birthday, all around!  Coming up: a wedding, so many Halloween parties that I’ve lost count, and then the rest of the holiday season. Wohoo!

We had a great weekend hanging out with our friends. Lots of good food again, and much good company. We are definitely still recovering from all the energy spent. The four days straight of 7am shifts is not helping with that. Next week I’m up at 40 hours, but three of the shifts start at 9am, I think I like that better. It’s still rough being away from my computer that much, I really would love to get my home-based businesses up and running and making money. Anyone want to sponsor me while I get started? 😉  Just dreading my 11th holiday season in retail.

I’m told today is Firefly’s 10th anniversary. So that’s cool. Might have to watch some tonight. Need to see the new Dr Who episode(s), too. Rich said a new season of Sherlock is on Netflix. 🙂  Avengers comes out on DVD Tuesday, thanks big brother. And all too soon, it will be time for Halloween and on into the holiday rush.

Weather is up and down and all over the place. Storms and hot or windy and cold, or sun and rain at the same time. It’s fun and mostly pleasant, so no complaints here.  Even the not so pleasant still tends to be pretty.

New financial year, means more hours at work. We’re reorganizing all the sections of the store to make them more shoppable and more shelvable. So, that’s loads of fun. At least we aren’t moving the sections again. Glowlights are shipping slowly, but surely. My store didn’t have a lot of reservations to go on.

Random pains the past week, but they’re never too terrible, nor too long lasting. New health food store up by work. Not sure putting it between Toys R Us and Costco is the best business plan, but ah well. Prices seem fairly decent and they carry my spelt, soba and powdered garlic. So, I’m happy. Though Ezekiel seems to have stopped shipping yeast-free bread to Columbus. Which is a bit sad.

Mother’s Day on Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day to Mom and Gale and my friends’ Moms and my friends who are Moms(that number keeps growing). Have a great weekend, you all deserve it. 🙂

Just over a week until Christmas. The store is busy, but I don’t work the evenings, so I don’t see the crazy. And I don’t have to work this coming weekend either – busiest weekend of the year.  So, I’m excited about that, too. I do have a forty hour week next week, including Christmas Eve, but hey. Can’t have everything.

I saw an article in the newspapers I put out today about some churches not having services on Christmas Sunday because “people don’t want to be in church on Christmas.” Now, much to Mom’s lament, I am no longer a regular church attender, but for those that are, this seems a ridiculous sentiment. In fact, before I read this headline, I was considering doing just that on Christmas morning. It’s Christmas… I mean, I suppose, folk’ll go to Christmas Eve services the night before, and once in a weekend is enough for s, buomet to not have services on a Sunday, because it is Christmas, just seems a little bit backwards to me.

Okay, enough ranting, back to your regularly scheduled commercialization of Christmas… So far, I’ve bought clothes with Christmas gift money. Pants, gloves, hat and socks. If I’m lucky, I’ll also manage new shoes. On the topic of pants, I don’t understand my body, and I wonder if I’m just odd or if other women have this problem. I tried to go thrifting, but after two runs through the racks for three different sizes, I gave up and went to Meijer where sizes are easier to come by. I have always felt my upper body is too small for my lower body and pants shopping proved it. I could not find a pair of pants big enough for my thighs and hips, and yet small enough for my waist. I did the best I could, but I still need to find a good belt that doesn’t pinch my belly. Maybe that’s what I’ll do with the little bit still left.

First holiday potluck of the season tonight, I should get ready and head out to that. Have a safe and happy holiday season all the way through to the New Year.

We have reset for the holidays at the store. The only changes from now until end of year will be new releases, and taking down Thanksgiving books at the end of November. Christmas music will probably start about that time, as well. Though Artist of the Month is Transiberian Orchestra already. They make me happy. We are hiring seasonal folk this year, after the fail of not having done last year. And I’m getting decent hours these days (for being part time). A new nook was announced, this one a tablet, and the prices on the rest dropped. So, lots of good electronic sales for the holiday season. I’m not excited for the crowds to come, but I think it should be a really good season for the store.

I got my resume updated and online this week. And I am about halfway through my WordPress book. So those are both moving forward again.

I got new tires today. My car is just over 106,000 miles now, and the edges had worn down completely. Cooper brand tires because they were out of the Goodyear. So instead of an $80 rebate, I got tires that were over $80 cheaper to begin with. Full replacement warranty, as well.  Any problems at all equals a free new tire.

Weather’s turning colder, leaves are bright colors or completely gone. No snow, but it’s my big brother’s birthday today. Happy Birthday, Pete. Hope you have a great day with wife and kids.

As ready as the store is for the holidays, we haven’t even begun to sort out our plans. Though I think we’ll be watching Girl With The Dragon Tattoo on Christmas. Plenty of friends and some family around, I’m sure we’ll have another wonderfully busy holiday season.

It’s been a fairly good week since I last posted. Had a good weekend hanging out with friends and then a surprise trip the the Ohio Renaissance Festival. It was there last day of operation for the season. Good thing someone checked, or we would have missed it again. We saw some fun shows, choked on a lot of dust and bought a few fun things. I got a skirt I’ve been eying for years and Rich got a drinking horn. We also got a Mud Show DVD of their Dante’s Inferno show, since we never manage to catch it live. All in all a good day, even if I did collapse into deep sleep in the car and the couch as soon as we got home, not to wake again until time for work Monday morning.

The store’s had a bit of rearranging going on in the management. Quietly, of course, so that I was not even able to put my name in for a vacated receiving (non-management) position before they had already filled it. Not that I object to their choice, it’s the one I figured they’d make if they weren’t taking volunteers/applicants. Just had a fleeting moment of – hey, I could be happy doing that. Ah well, two more weeks at the school and maybe I can start my previous plans up again.

As for health/diet. Still need to make appointments. And I’m working my way slowly back to proper eating. No more than two dead animals a week, and no more than on sweet/junk thing a day and pizza dialed back to once a month. Yes, this is a step forward. It’s fall, everyone at the store is baking/bringing in doughnuts, and the office manager at the school kept foisting candy off on me so as not to feet guilty eating it herself. And not that I was Making a lot of meat and pizza, but meals with Rich or out of the house(which is happening a lot running from store to school) are tending to lean more towards those choices. So, I’ll dial it back slowly, and see where I can get to. Also remembering to take my meds/supplements every day.

I can’t even think of anything I’ve done in the last week. How do people blog daily? I have a hard time doing weekly sometimes. Hm… I’ve started rereading the Callahan series by Spider Robinson. I think I’ve got almost all of them now. I might be missing one, but I’d have to check again.

20-30 hours at work all this month, so that’s good. After this week I go back to all 7am shifts, not Quite so good, but can’t have everything. No news on the other fronts. Still debating between the ease of Craigslist and the possibility of higher profit (for loads more effort) on eBay for the Care Bears. Anyone know a collector who will just solve the problem for me? 😉

Upcoming August Highlights: Family birthdays, and our 7th Anniversary.

We’ve been in the new place for a month now, still not decorated and the electronics aren’t all set up yet, but we’re getting there. It’s nice and cozy with just a little bit of clutter. Got a bunch of books for my birthday to fill up partial collections (Thank, Gale and Larry). Got an awesome papasan for the library. It’s so soft and fluffy! Slightly noisy neighbors, but mostly just during the day, so no big deal there. And the maintenance guy has fixed everything we’ve asked him to. I have to make one more request, but it’s minor, so I’m not worried about it yet.

As for work, we’re rearranging the Entire store, so I’ve got a lot more hours as the regular workers are pulling all-nighters. So that’ll help balance the budget after moving expenses ran a little high. No FTP details, and my educator friend is taking a well-earned and much needed vacation this week, so no updates on other fronts.

On a geeky level, we’re still polishing up The Legacy of Heroes for August publication. Next week is maximum level characters, just to go all out and see what happens. I started work on two character concepts yesterday, because I couldn’t choose between them. The amount of customization in this new system is just fantastic.

On a health level, pretty much maintaining at this point. I’m not feeling substantially better, yet, for the first month of drugs, but I’m not feeling worse for the slightly deteriorating eating habits.  I’m not maintaining the 80% alkaline anymore, but in general my eating habits are far better than they used to be, and I don’t eat much junk food aside from chocolate. And I do aim for the darkest I can find. Finding a balance, but still hoping to hit a slightly higher plateau than this.

Toga party went really well on Friday. I’m still waiting on pictures of my outfit. We had a nice big crowd both nights. The dance contest was a success as well, with three great contestants. Not sure if chaos twister ever happened, but the drinks were tasty, the music good and everyone had a wonderful time. We had a huge crew there, and pack in, setups and pack out all went quickly and smoothly. Our Bob’s, however, was all boarded up, but IHOP took very good care of us instead.

It’s June now, time to buckle down and get packing. I’ve made a list of all the places I need to change our address with. It’s a pretty huge list. Mom brought me a bunch of boxes, and we’re gonna need tons more.Yay for B&N and liquor stores. I think all the boxes we had two years ago went out to friends. If anyone still has some, donations are welcome.

I’ve started an official event for the move an invited lots of people to come help. Naturally when I went to work today, for the first time since the holidays, they had the schedule posted a month out and I’m working 7-11 that morning. Ah well, they can lift heavy furniture without me. 😉  I’ll be home in time for the boxes.

After the move, I think, I’m actually going to take the time to put stuff up on eBay. Before we move would be ideal, but I don’t think that I’m going to have the time. June project – Moving. July project – Ebay. Probably won’t get started on my computer studies until that’s all taken care of. Maybe I can work on designing my course of study during this time when I get tired of packing, moving, unpacking, selling and mailing.
