First convention of the year this weekend. Spent the day doing the last of the shopping to get ready for it. I am still short proper footwear for the wedding, but everything else is in place. One weekend of relaxing and hanging out with my friends to commence at noon tomorrow when I get off work. Zag days for January to commence with dinner tomorrow evening. Very much looking forward to this. The holidays are over, work is back to normal, and time to celebrate with friends.

Things are going well at work. Bookup had a good holiday season as well. Not a whole lot going on web-wise for me lately, but I’m still working on it.

Health is pretty good. I got a new cookbook with big acid/alkaline charts. So, that helps, though a lot of the recipes involve cheese for some reason. There are  a lot of good ideas and new information in it.

I got a couple rejection letters last week for the stories I sent out. Looking at doing some more submitting soon. Not a lot of time to write, but I’ve had a few ideas and I’ve been reading more lately.

This is kind of scattered. I’m tired and ready for the weekend. More next week.

Published again! My flash fiction piece, Dead Eyes, has been published in a 365 story vampire anthology called Daily Bites of Flesh, by Pill Hill Press.  The anthology should hit Amazon and B&N.com soon.

Hours at the story ramp up as do the holiday sales and shoppers. I really enjoyed getting to work through the games backstock today. Such a geek, but I like making things organized and neat. Pained me a bit to not get to finish cleaning up the receiving shelves, but got a lot of product out onto the floor.

Bookup.com had a great weekend/Black Friday sale. Many CDs and DVDs are being shipped out this week.

I can start applying for jobs on Elance again on Sunday. I have been studying up for my next skills test, only to find that there’s a New edition to the Chicago Manual of Style that I did not know had come out. It’s pale blue, which I find a little bit creepy. Not sure why I like the bright orange better, but I do. They have updated for modern technology and usage according to the jacket cover.

It is December already, the year is almost over. So much done and so much yet to do. Up next, Christmas shopping!

Only the hospital to sort out now. Just filled in the paperwork and made a couple of the new, reduced payments. As far as we’re concerned, the hospital is sorted, we’re paying them what we can pay them, and if they don’t like it, they can ::gasp:: Call Us Back. New car is registered and payments set up to auto-deduct. Despite my dreary appraisal of my review, I did get a small raise, and heading into the holidays, perhaps there will be a few more hours available. Yes, I was hoping to be out of there by now, but that’s what I say every year about this time. I have to take massive action if I really expect to leave the store, and I haven’t yet. My own fault, so I march onward. It’s only October, I could still get out before the holidays really hit. Again, it would require massive action, am I ready? Probably not, since I’m sitting here blogging about it.

Excited about my work with Bookup lately. I started some new split tests this week. And two new email campaigns. To provide value to the customer, I am sending out more tutorial videos when they sign up or buy the program. I have also started work on updating the Help file from the old file that Windows no longer will read. I am very excited about that, not only because it will help our customers, but also because I will learn about the program as well. Next project on the burner for me, is transcribing the videos for those who prefer text to sitting through videos, especially if they have low connection speeds. These things make me geekily happy to an extent that’s a little disturbing. 😉

Surely, these are the things I should be doing instead of the store to make all the money I need? But they’re so random and specific, that I don’t even know how to find such work. Need to look closer at elance.com, but I was required to sign up in only one category when my skills kinda slip and slide over three. I think it requires paying them to be allowed multiple categories. Ah well, new things to add to my resume skill sets list. I’ll figure it out.

Maybe the email campaigns will take off so well that I can just quit the store and spend all the time I want working for Bookup, on a monthly retainer fee instead of charging hourly contract fees. And then do anything else I want to bring in whatever extra money I want beyond that which I need to feel stable. That’s the ideal, pipe-dream goal anyway. So much to do, so many obligations, such wonders just waiting to be found. Life is amazing.

We have nearly got all our bills down to reasonable payments, just waiting for the last couple to call us back so we can tell them what we are going to be paying them from here out. All the payments will come out of our HSA, and the deposit each month will be equal to the payments. We have decided to cash in half of our savings to get the car loan fiasco straightened out, we made the mess, we will fix it. So, with everything heading in the right direction, by Wednesday our budget could be balanced again and we can focus on more important things.

Rich is putting out feelers for a better job. I am looking at markets with fresh (if sleepy) eyes. I really enjoy working for Bookup.com and I am hoping we get things moving on an upward slope, business has been going better but there is a lot of work to do. Barnes & Noble is a good company, and all the strange news right now just has to do with stocks, but it may be time for me to move on. I enjoy my schedule and free time it allows, but there could be better things just waiting for me to find them.

Health is going fairly well. Has its ups and downs. Some days I hurt more than others, but nothing like the debilitating pain I used to have. Lower stress and better eating helps so much.

Food of the week: Spelt Pizza topped with tomato sauce, broccoli and spinach

Rich made the calls yesterday. One bill down, one bill corrected, two bills waiting on approval. The hospital specific bills are still in negotiations. Two weeks after application and the loan rep still has not called us back, but we ran out of time today.

I submitted a story and two queries this week. I have decided to find the joy in my writing again. Remember the fun and not worry about the money. It is clear that my career path to Best Selling Author is going to be a long one, so I might as well enjoy myself along the way. I was only submitting to high paying markets(well, high paying for fantasy fiction) and ignoring the fact that any publicity is good publicity. Sure, I still want to see my name in the glossies, but seeing it in a small run magazine is better than no where at all. So, I’ll be taking another look at markets and possibilities. Amazing what one acceptance will do to flagging enthusiasm.

Work is going alright on all fronts, not great, not stupendous, but it is going steadily. Getting email follow ups cleaned up, gathering ideas for new email campaigns. Fixing up MasterChess 7000 with cool new features. Getting ready for the next big thing for Chess Openings Wizard and Bookup.com. Barnes & Noble is gearing up for the holiday run.

Things are busy and good and looking up. I am so very lucky to have this life.

Do You Feel Older? July 29, 2010

That seems to be the question of the week. I have generally responded with: I’ve felt old since I was 17, I feel pretty good today. I had a wonderful birthday weekend with friends and chosen family. I didn’t see any of my blood family, but I did talk to both my parents and my brother. It was good to hear from them, too.

I ate a lot of wonderful food, both out at restaurants, and made specially for me. About half of it was healthy and good for me, about half of it was delicious anyway. 😉   My joints are getting back at me this week for it, though, so back to alkaline for me. Started the week with wheat grass juice, still tastes awful, but I’m getting better at drinking it. Inta Juice is a lovely shop and doesn’t charge nearly as much as Whole Foods used to (when they still had it).

For my birthday I got a couple books, some DVDs, some gaming dice and some clothes. Thanks go out to my parents and my in-laws for those. Knowledge, entertainment and clothing to go with the nourishment and fellowship. I also saw two movies, Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Inception. Next week, Cedar Point to top it off with a fun experiences.

Inception sent my mind whirling, partially about the topic of the movie, creating reality in dreams, but also into other types of reality creation. In parts of the movie the soundtrack/sound effects were quite blatant, and it made me think about creating with music. The moods and emotions that music invokes and the creativity it can inspire. I have always enjoyed fantasy stories where music is the medium of magic, because it is so meaningful to us and speaks to us in ways that words alone may not.

It also got me thinking about creating the reality I want to live in. Creating the life I want to have. Creating the online presence, websites, and business(es) I want to design. Mike’s getting advice for the Bookup.com website and one of the things that was said was he should fire his web designer. We both agreed with this advice and were glad that he didn’t hire me as his web designer. I don’t have the skills for that, we both know that, but they are skills I want to gain. At the moment I am more like his web programmer, he tells me what he wants and I make it happen. We both need advice and guidance in the design category. I am very grateful that this coach has some ideas in this area.

There are so many things I want to do, all spinning about my head. I want to learn WordPress, learn how to make custom Themes, create a website offering both these Themes and tips and tricks and advice for WordPress in general. I have a lot of WordPress references, books, websites, personal advice, that I would like to collect all in one place, for myself at the very least.

Next step, is a curiosity about Joomla. What it can do. What I can do with it. I have started gathering reference material, but I think WordPress first, it seems an easier thing to learn.

I also have writing projects, Traffic Ultimatum, Four Hour Work Week, affiliates, a gaming carry-all and getting out of Barnes & Noble running around in my head. Not to mention my simple weekly blogging, the growing stack of books I want to read, investing, and medical bills. Life is crazy, fun, wonderful, exciting and full of so many opportunities. I have My Next Thirty Years by Tim McGraw running through my head lately. They will definitely be the best years of my life.

My Health – I missed my doctor’s appointment this week. Thought I’d set a reminder, but I must have put it on my old phone. I didn’t realize until dinner the next evening. I called today and they graciously waived the missed appointment fee. I haven’t taken any meds in… I’m not sure, two months, maybe?  I haven’t done my blood work either. Once we get our current medical bills under control, I’ll get that done and probably talk to her, but that’s on hold for now. My joints are doing really well these days, elbow’s still a little swollen, but it’s not painful or problematic. As far as the diet, I stay fairly well on course, eating lots of salads and veggies and spelt products. I do eat desserts on a fairly regular basis, a cookie here, a bit of chocolate cake there. With MarCon coming up at the end of the month I’ve been pretty good, saving up my cheating this month for that, though I’ll still try to have some salad when it’s available.

MarCon – Multiple Alternative Realities Convention – is in two weeks. It’s a horror theme this year, not my favorite, but it should still be a fun time. The committee is working to pull together the programming, guests and gaming. I’m looking forward to seeing the costumes, art show and dealers room. Not that I have money to spend there, but I do enjoy ogling the pretties.

Cedar Point – In celebration of Bookup returning to non-copy protected, registration-only software, and the headaches that will relieve, Mike and I are taking Monday off to go to Cedar Point.

Bookup – The Express update without copy protection (returning to the registration system he used to use) was released last week, the trial version yesterday and hopefully the Professional version tomorrow. We have two very skilled gentlemen working on our Forum integration and are debating two help desk solutions. One works as is, though I’m not sold on how it works, the other has integration issues I would love to get solved. The membership site itself is up and ready, once we get the forum and help desk finished, we will just have to convince 44K people to create passwords and start using it. I’ve been reading a lot about generating free internet traffic, and am preparing to put some of that to work for Bookup. Everything is coming together.

B&N is alternating between 4 and 8 hours a week for me now. Bookup stays fairly steady at one full day and two half days. We have two people working on our forum integration. I got the help desk set up yesterday, but there are two problems to overcome there as well.  I am moving forward in learning the Traffic Ultimatum system. I have not had much luck finding good options to play lately. I will check IBD again soon.

My health continues to be good, though I’ve been fighting the beginnings of a sore throat with fresh OJ, hot cider and Alkaselzter Cold and Cough. Yoga has been a great addition to my life, increased flexibility is already present, though I don’t get to go to the full class very often. This morning I didn’t groan at a single “take a vinyasa” as was my habit previously.

I am currently off all medications, though I do now have health insurance cards for the newest policy Rich’s company has adopted. I’m not sure I mentioned this, but I have a new GP-OB/GYN here in town, instead of having to run to Newark, and a clean bill of health from her as well. I see my RA doc soon, and need to make a Dentist appointment as well, they’ve been calling again.

Rich had a couple setbacks this week. Some trouble with possible hernias that he is getting checked out today. And a slight mishap in a parking lot between his car and an SUV.  All is well and being taken care of, insurance is a wonderful thing.

Coming soon: Cedar Point and MarCon

Rich home from the hospital. Another friend had outpatient nasal surgery. I’ve been trying to get things organized, reprioritized and scheduled. Rich just started a new work schedule. We got health insurance, but next month they are switching companies. Yay for two deductibles… I had already made a yearly check up appointment before I knew we were switching, so that will go against the current deductible, and then I will get to start all over when we switch. We are not even clear on when that is, though enrollment is April, and they say we will not be without coverage at all. We will see. I have an ever growing stack of bills from Rich’s stay. I need to start calling people, it is just a little overwhelming.

To take my mind off it, I made a few stock trades today. Following Connor’s covered call strategy from Multiple Streams of Income, I chose three stocks from IBD, checked their charts and open options interest. I put one order straight in, the other two I have some limit orders in on so I get the profit I want out of them.

Things at Bookup are moving along, we are trying to get a new forum and helpdesk up, running and properly integrated with our new membership system. We have hit a few snags, but we will figure them out eventually. In the mean time, the systems we have running are getting better all the time. And I have a good bunch of ideas for the website and internet marketing.

Ideas spinning, time running, everything moving forward.

Storms and snow and sleet and rain and ice and wind. Welcome to winter in Ohio. I don’t know what the official numbers are, but the path through the snow to our parking lot comes up almost to my knees. Not the several feet of snow the papers were reporting further east, but plenty to make life interesting. Once again pondering the Z, but no more answers than we had before. We’re going up this weekend to wish our nephew a belated 4th birthday, apparently we weren’t the only ones that missed the party last week.

Elbow aside, my health is stable. Work is fairly stable, too. Waiting on the tax return to start shifting money and making a couple purchases. Got my car serviced today, had to replace all my windshield wipers, the ice has not been kind to them. Also got a taillight replaced, I think that was the most expensive part of the operation. But it’s done now, no more worrying about getting pulled over for a burnt out lightbulb.

Have discovered spring rolls. Now if only PF Chang’s didn’t have huge mushrooms in them, it would be perfect.
