Temps have been all over the board this week. Just another January in Ohio. Had a great time with my friends at DeCon this past weekend. Played some games, had some tasty food, even danced a tiny bit. Short post today because I’m also hanging out with friends tonight, and tomorrow, and the next day. Busy, happy life.

Finished Small Favors, and I’m now on Turn Coat in the Dresden binge. At work, I finished Callahan Chronicles, and now I’m listening to Star Beast by Heinlein. Still waiting on quite a few books on the hold list.

So much to do, and so little time. 🙂

DeCon was great! As always, and even more so this year. Record-breaking attendance, and great participation. I had a lot of fun at the Tom Smith concert – with plans to get his kids album for a friend (didn’t have cash at the time). The parties were fun, the panels well received. A good time indeed.

Getting some movement on the job search front. Fingers crossed. Digitized a new newspaper at CML this week – The Columbus Challenger, so that’ll be going up soon. The OhioDIG meeting got postponed again, though.

On the homefront, I had to take my car in for repairs, and will have to again when I get a job sorted. Fortunately, it was the regular battery, not the hybrid battery, but still it isn’t a normal battery. Myers is replacing my furnace tomorrow morning, so I stayed with friends last night, and have electric heaters tonight. But hey, at least it looks like the blizzard is missing Columbus this weekend.

This weekend is DeConpression 13, a relaxicon put on by a handful of my friends, that I will be attending with a whole lot of my friends. Movies, singing, coloring, cooking contest, panels, dancing, and having a bunch of fun. So looking forward to it.

On the job front, I’m getting a lot of silence. But I’m back volunteering at CML, so I’ve got something to do besides watch Netflix all day. Two more rolls of the index digitized this week. Working on my PHP skills, soon to be put to productive use. No really, I’m going to get those genealogy pages working some day, I swear. 😉 Went to a Life Planning (death planning) class last night, and learned all about wills, and various powers of attorney, and advanced directives. So, some things to do to get my affairs in order… which will be more important when I get hired somewhere.

We have snow this week, that’s actually sticking around a few days. So, at least it’s prettier out. Finished Cold Days by Jim Butcher, and am now on Skin Game. Watched some new (to me) movies over the weekend – The Abyss, Pentagon Wars, Falling Down, and Practical Magic (turns out I hadn’t ever seen that). Finished watching Defying Gravity (why do interesting/good space shows always end too soon?) and started watching The Expanse.

Writing up this post early as tomorrow night will be moving gear into the hotel for the weekend, and finishing homework for the week. And then starting Friday, I will mostly offline, at least as far as blogging is concerned. Local cons are nice, I don’t have to worry about forgetting something. 🙂

First class is interesting, though it’s another Tuesday due date class. So that’ll be fun. Though, we get lower grades if we wait until Tuesday to turn in the work (because we’re supposed to be discussing it throughout the week). So that might help things along. And no Group Project!  Yay!! I do have to observe a partner to do my final assignment, but not nearly as tricky as constant group interaction and coordination.

Work is work, interview did not pan out. Picture book sliced my finger wide open today right on the inside of a joint. But the cardboard displays for the OSU Sports Illustrated Special Edition did not do too much damage. Ah winter, full of dry, fragile skin.

See you next week!

Late posting, due to taking some time for myself at the end of the week. Went up to visit friends for a few days of quiet, good food, and relaxing. Before all the crazy gets started again. It was a very nice few days.

Monday, which is still tomorrow for a few more minutes, I start Spring semester (doesn’t really feel like spring with an ice storm moving through tonight).  Information Storage and Retrieval Systems and Digital Curation classes and a PHP & MySQL workshop.

More new job stuff in the works, as well. Thank you Mom, Erin, Kevin, and Savory for the Interview Clothing assistance.

The end of the week begins the official Convention season for me. DeCon here in town gets us going. Really looking forward to spending the weekend with friends. And many more to come.

Including the snow and freezing cold temperatures, again. Winter is well and fully upon us. The parking lot has been stained white with salt. Pipes are bursting from the freezing temperatures, both down town(last cold snap) and at the mall (today).

School has started back up. This class looks to be very interesting, even the theory parts aren’t too bad. Big projects coming up. Got started recording my own habits a couple days this week. Our discussion groups are smaller – only 6 people per group this time. So far, so good.

DeCon was a blast, as always. Good food, good friends and good times. And a very nice night Sunday playing cards to recover from all the hard work it takes to support a convention.

Working on my tax return as I type this (well, I’m not typing in two screens at once, just waiting on the answer to a question so I can finish filing). Looks like a good refund again this year. Tickets to England in August shall be purchased soon.

Started snowing again today. They say its going to snow all weekend. I like winter better when there’s snow on the ground. Seems more comforting than just biting wind and overcast skies.

My Access to Information class started this week. Looks like it’s going to be a very interesting, and challenging class. The big projects get progressively bigger in length and scope as the semester goes on.  Looking forward to the practical side of things, which she says we’ll get to after the first month or so.

Suspended my Ancestry.com account this week, until my next break in courses. I can still see the tree I made, I just can’t search up any more documentation until I pay them again. I just don’t have the time to spend on it with classes going again. Did find some more of my Mom’s roots, including some kings of Brittany and one of the Norman noble invaders of England in 1066.

DeCon this weekend, should be a blast. Can’t wait to relax and hang out with friends. Heading to move gear to the hotel shortly.

Cold and ice and snow and more cold. Yay winter. 😉   Except that it makes me want to hibernate. Which I’ve let myself do a lot in this month off from school. Lots of movies and reading and playing Flow Colors. Classes start Monday, though, so back to the busy.

Applied to four new library jobs last week. People are freaking out that B&N is planning to close 20 stores a year for the next decade, or so the internets say. There are 7 B&Ns in Columbus, it seems the market’s a bit over-saturated to me, but what do I know about business.

Trying to make healthier foods, and still satiate my need for warm foods this winter. I made chili last week, but next time I need to make it spicier. Made penne and artichoke hearts today. It was quite tasty. Mixed together all the nuts and seeds I had to make my own trail mix. I must be spoiled by cheap tuna, I didn’t really like the albacore white I got the other day. More experimenting to come.

DeCon coming up next weekend. 🙂

Learning New Things January 24, 2013

Spent some time this week learning about Joomla! with a friend who was creating a new website. Read my copy of Joomla! for Dummies on the nook ereader app on my laptop. It worked alright, except for the comic at the beginning of each chapter didn’t show the bottom half, and therefore the punchline. Joomla! is interesting. I’ve got some more work to do with it before I pass final judgement, but setting up a site seems overly complicated, though, because of that, site maintenance, updating and organization seems like it will be better and more controllable than WP. Also not keen on the percentage of plugin-type things that cost money. Yet another reason to learn more programming myself.

Birthdays coming up. Aunt Terri, have a Happy Birthday on Sunday!  My nephew is early next month. Still haven’t decided what to get him. Maybe some more erector sets, or legos. I don’t know much about chapter books, and he already has all the Magic Tree House ones. Maybe A-Z Mysteries…

Had a convention this past weekend. Nice, quiet and relaxing, as it was meant to be. Went to a couple panels run by friends, didn’t heckle… I mean help, too much. Just relaxed and hung out a lot. Danced and sang a little at the party to some familiar songs. And cheered with the rest when it was announced they’d made enough money to have the convention again next year.

The convention went well. The panels were lightly attended, but fun. The parties had good music and silly dancing. The afternoon was full of boardgames, coloring and just plain relaxing. I had a good time hanging out with lots of good friends. And the con, once again, made enough to continue another year. DeCon 10 next year will be Cthulu’s year. Should be great fun.

Other than that. Not much to report. Ohio still hasn’t figured out what season it is for more than two days running. I didn’t come down with Con Crud. Tax papers are trickling in, hopefully that’ll go better than last year. Joints are feeling pretty good this week. Still need to eat better, but that statement actually means something completely different than it might have a few years ago.
