The worse thing you can do is to do nothing.

The weekend was full of friends and family. Supporting each other, acknowledging each other and sharing with each other. We celebrated triumphs and mourned our losses. We hugged and laughed and cried together. And life keeps going.

Jobs are never stable, no matter what we think. We’re excited for Rich’s new opportunity, but other friends are questioning their “stable” jobs. I’ve worked for the store for over eight years, and this last one has given me the worst number of scheduled hours ever. And though, I would admit to getting more cynical, I do not believe I have become worse at the job.

I haven’t made really good financial choices in the last few years, but we’ve made due with what we’ve had and a lot of things were out of my control. This month, Rich got a better paying job and I found a cheaper apartment to consider moving to.

I’m working on projects and considering my next move. I tried Elance, but got frustrated with the lack of response to my proposals. I had several friends ask for help on webdesign, but then not follow through for various reasons. I applied for my (second) dream job again, with no response. I’m considering checking out the local academic houses, but last I looked, they wanted managers, not editing pool. Retail was never my end game, I’m still trying to figure out what is.

I’m looking to downsize, too, before moving. Sell some things on eBay. I have a rather large collection of Carebears and Carebear Cousins that are just taking up space. I loved them as a child, but find myself less attached and wishing I Sold It on eBay stores still existed. Have collections of the TMNT movie(all three) cards, too, but I don’t think anyone Ever paid real money for those. The weather might still be cold, but I’m infected with Spring Cleaning.

Valentine’s Day February 17, 2011

This Monday was Valentine’s Day. A day with all sorts of strange history and traditions and lore. But, for me, it is a day to celebrate love, loved ones and family. This year, for me, it was a day of gratitude. I thanked my parents for their shining example of love and marriage. I thanked my husband for making my life so full and wonderful. And I thanked some good friends for all they have given and taught me. It was a day of laughter, love and affection. And I now also say thank you to everyone else in my life. I have amazing friends and family all around me, and I am forever grateful.

What else?

Nephew’s birthday party is this weekend, more time with the family, and his extended family. It will be a chaotic mixing of the cousins, full of cake, ice cream and wrapping paper. I am looking forward to it, my brother’s kids are adorable.

Submitted a couple stories on Monday, already got one rejection back. I go through cycles of ditching all my old stories and starting over now and then. I really like the two I’m currently promoting the most, but it might be time to file them away.

Picked back up with Elance again. Though I’m having trouble finding jobs to apply to this week. Anyone need an editor/Wordpress monkey? Resume available upon request. 😉 I really do like how Elance has things set up, but I need a few successful jobs and good feedback to get credibility.

I have to find someplace to do my taxes for me, way too many forms and too much confusion this year. I’ve never seen so many different 1099 forms. And I disagree with TurboTax. Thinking Liberty Tax or H&R Block. Any suggestions?

Okay, I think that’s about it for this week. Take care, kind readers. 🙂

Ice Storms February 3, 2011

We had freezing From Monday through Wednesday morning. I chipped my car out of the ice twice, went out both Monday and Tuesday nights, and yet, it was Wednesday night when I slipped and fell on the ice, when it had a nice coating of snow on top of it. I am so talented. I am alright, though, hip is a little tender, but not bad at all, considering I was carrying a large box at the time. The storms did not take our power or even our internet, though some of the trees are worse for the wear. We were lucky this week.

I’m still coughing, one week into ten days of antibiotics, and it’s still clinging to my lungs. Other than that, and cranky shoulders, I’m doing pretty well, health wise. It seems to be the time of surgery for my friends, several wisdom teeth and a shoulder, so good and healing thoughts to all of them.

I finally got back to Elance, applying to five jobs on Monday. No response yet, but most of them had another week of open applications. Spent some time looking at openings in town, but most of the ones I found listed were for managerial positions and required teaching experience, degrees in subjects I don’t have or experience I don’t have. I haven’t given up on the store yet, but some days, I think a better paycheck would be nice. Other days I think the internet is the way to go, if only I could get a brilliant idea that a few thousand people would pay for on a monthly basis. Some day maybe, eh? It’s good to have dreams.

I missed last week because of the Con Crud.  The con itself was an amazingly good time. Friends and fun and food. We all hung out and relaxed and partied. But the following week, we ALL got sick. And I do mean all. I don’t know who brought the flu to the con, but pretty much everyone I know that attended, with a couple rare exceptions, ended up sick during the following week.

I had a fever ranging up to 102.8, headache, nasty cough, runny nose and all. I have gotten rid of most of that, except the cough. It is persisting, so I went to the doctor today to get antibiotics to kick it the rest of the way out. Normally I wouldn’t but normally, I’d also let it hang around for a month. Thought I’d like to get rid of it faster this time.

Read a couple books while I was sick. Now on the third book of the Ultimate Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy. It might have amused me a little too much to begin reading it on a nook, but I am a geek. Watched the BBC miniseries of it last week, as well. Very amusing.

Work is odd. Must get back in gear on Elance again. Healthy first, then back to the grindstone. To live the life I want, effort must be made.

Published again! My flash fiction piece, Dead Eyes, has been published in a 365 story vampire anthology called Daily Bites of Flesh, by Pill Hill Press.  The anthology should hit Amazon and B&N.com soon.

Hours at the story ramp up as do the holiday sales and shoppers. I really enjoyed getting to work through the games backstock today. Such a geek, but I like making things organized and neat. Pained me a bit to not get to finish cleaning up the receiving shelves, but got a lot of product out onto the floor.

Bookup.com had a great weekend/Black Friday sale. Many CDs and DVDs are being shipped out this week.

I can start applying for jobs on Elance again on Sunday. I have been studying up for my next skills test, only to find that there’s a New edition to the Chicago Manual of Style that I did not know had come out. It’s pale blue, which I find a little bit creepy. Not sure why I like the bright orange better, but I do. They have updated for modern technology and usage according to the jacket cover.

It is December already, the year is almost over. So much done and so much yet to do. Up next, Christmas shopping!

It has been an interesting week. In the interests of getting myself motivated to get on with my life and grow up, I took the week away from Bookup. I finished up one project from home on Monday and have been tracking metrics daily, but I have not gone to the corporate office this week. Instead, I spent the time applying to jobs on Elance, setting up an account at Textbroker.com, and working on some personal website projects.

I am actually quite excited about one of the jobs at Elance that I applied for, though I don’t know if the employer will accept my enthusiasm. It involves analyzing the effects of some 18th and 19th century literature on the current vision of the vampire in today’s literature and media. Might end up reading all the pieces even if I don’t get the job. I enjoy Bookup and have no intention of leaving, but if I’m ever going to get out of retail, I have to get the rest of my life moving, as well.

Rich’s schedule changed starting last week, giving him Friday and Saturday off. Which is nice. Weekend time together, though I’m usually working all day Friday and working or asleep on Saturday. 😉 We’ll see how that all falls out over the next few weeks of adjusting.

Health and finances are going on par for the year. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and then Christmas and New Year’s.  Where did 2010 go? So much to do, and time keeps zipping by.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.

Tomorrow is Guy Fawkes Night. We shall celebrate with V for Vendetta tonight since we’ll be busy tomorrow. Elections were earlier this week, it seems an appropriate time for such a holiday.

St. Ann‘s is still sending us nasty-grams about our bills, even though we keep calling them. Rich will be trying again tomorrow. They’re the last hold out on getting our payments fixed. They aren’t happy with the smaller payments we’ve sent them, but they haven’t been returning our calls in a timely manner, either. Might have to go hunt down their office up the road in person.

Signed a new consulting contract with Bookup. In negotiations with Flowered Intentions. Still seeking my first editing job on Elance. Lots of hours from the B&N this week and next. They tried to give me an extra one today, but I didn’t notice early enough to take a lunch break, so I had to leave at the previously scheduled time or not get paid for half an hour of work. Logging in and out for the Nook counter is really inefficient use of payroll. But the new NookColor looks pretty sweet. Looking forward to a demo device.

November and cold weather is here. Need to sew new buttons on my coat and maybe get a few warmer skirts.
