I had a great holiday week off from work, and it was super busy and fun.

I visited my brother, sister-in-law and family. Five kids is a lot, but we played a few games together, and had a nice time. The kids’re all playing Fortnite these days, when not on YouTube or running around.

I finally got to visit my parents’ house as well. (Pictures in previous post.) We mostly relaxed and watched TV while Dad colored. Mom made tasty food and treats for me. Bailey is a silly dog, but she’s a good girl.

I also got to visit with Erika, Alyssa, and Kate ( and Kate’s Mom). That was nice, just to hang out and chat like we used to. Only now it’s about kids and family.

Over the weekend prior to the New Year, I spent around 50 hours playing D&D with a small group, and we had a blast. We started and ended in a homebrew world, and powered through Curse of Strahd in the middle. The DM went above and beyond, including organizing an in-character candlelit dinner with Strahd.

Formally set table with rose centerpiece and candelabrum.

I am organizing my writing into one place again. I also started listening to a new book after finishing City of Brass. Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller, a young genderfluid thief strives to become one of the Queen’s assassins.

Well, it’s definitely winter down here in Ohio. Temperatures have plummeted, and frost and snow keep covering the cars and ground. Nothing serious, yet, but just enough to remind us of the season.

At work, I’ve finished the Guided Interviews of my Usability Study, and next week I try to tempt random volunteers for a card sort exercise. It’ll be finals week, so I don’t know if I’ll get any, but it’s worth a try. Then we have a month-long break between semesters, including an entire week+ off between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. That will be awesome, first time ever, for me. Have already started planning family visits and gaming marathons.

Along the gaming lines, I’ve had a spectacular few weeks, having successfully completed our Marathon and finished off two campaigns. All by defeating super-powerful entities that people/cultists/dragons were trying to bring in/rise up/free to take over the world. Huzzah!

On the reading front, I’m still making my way through City of Brass, but I have quite a few thing waiting in the wings, thanks to reading Publisher’s Weekly at work. I’m still trying to make my way through Campaign 1 of Critical Role, and have made it through Episode 47 so far.

On the writing front, I’ve started writing holiday letters to people, typing up my marathon notes as though being told by the character I played, and an ever-growing backstory for my next marathon character. I’ll have another character backstory to write on Tuesday, as well. I’m still journaling, and pondering the next few scenes for my NaNo piece, too.

Merry Yule, Happy Solstice, and Merry Christmas!

Christmas

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season. I’ve attended two gatherings so far, five more to go. Having a great time with friends, and this weekend, I get to spend time with the puppy, too.

Rogue One was a great movie, looking forward to seeing it again. 🙂 Still listening to more Dresden at home – up to book 6 now.  Still working on Captain’s Fury at work. Have another short story collection ready to go next.

Work is good, and fairly busy. I’ve got a handful of applications out for full time work, as well.

Hope everyone has a wonderful, and safe, holiday season.

Snow today, freezing temps all day. It must finally be winter, though not officially. They test ran the salt trucks today on the highway. While also blocking off the highway a bit for a Trump visit. Busy day.

Had an interview last week, and received a no, thank you, letter today. Keeping an eye out for more. Full time soon would be really helpful. Otherwise, finishing up one collection at Sprawl, and I have a couple more on line. CML is gearing up for the holidays. Main has a holiday party and a couple concerts on the docket.

Finished up Cursor’s Fury, and had some Heinlein short stories, and now I’m into Harm None. Captain’s Fury is up next.

Pulling out my crockpot lately. Had Beef Stew last weekend. Pot roast toady. Maybe Chili this weekend. Tasty foods for cold weather.

Halloween completed, just Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s to go. This year is going by so quickly, and so slowly. So much has happened in my life, and in this country, and in the world this year. And yet, the election cycle, nearly complete, has seemed endless. But we’re almost there. I’ve already voted, and in less than a week, everyone else will have, too.

In the world of sports, Congrats Cubs fans, and Cleveland, that was an awesome post season, and a well fought final game. Also, Go Blue! Wolverines are having a really nice season, too.

In work news – work is work. Keeping busy at Whitehall. We’re about to start serving after school snacks to the kids who come for our Homework Help Center. I’m still having fun with all the old and signed books at Sprawl, while Mowgli continues to talk to architects to get the actual library remodeled. Starting to look more seriously for full time positions – end of this month is when I can start applying around CML.

In book news, still working my way through Academ’s Fury, and I have Off to Be the Wizard, waiting in the wings. Not really doing NaNoWriMo this year, but I am planning on doing more writing for Me this month.

A working weekend ahead, I have shifts both Saturday and Sunday. Weee! So relaxing tomorrow. Maybe going out to watch people bowl.

That’s the trouble with late posting, just a couple days later and it is time to post again.

Not much to update on in the last few days. Homework is done for the week… until my Professor decides to actually post the quiz for this week. She keeps changing up the end of class schedule, and this time may have outdone herself by switching it to a quiz she had not written yet.

As usual, it’s the holidays, so if anyone wants a seasonal job at B&N, let me know. We’re hiring.

I get a couple nights to relax, and then a party with Fleet on Saturday. A pretty quiet week for me, to recover from last week.

Sorry about the late post, folks.  This past week has been crazy busy.

Final week of Intro to Digital Preservation has been completed. Final project has been turned in. I fully expect an A in this class. And I actually had a great time doing the group project. My group members all worked really hard and were more than willing to take on responsibilities. My only complaints were nothing to do with the project, having to wait for discussion posts so I could reply to them. One more month of Digital Libraries to go. And then I have just over a month off for the holidays. Spring classes are set and ready to go. Including the workshop I wanted to take. <fingers crossed>

Had a great Halloween weekend with friends. Our three-night party was spectacular, if exhausting. I slept for twelve hours today, and still had to force myself out of bed this evening. Last week’s party was great, too, and Much more relaxing. Next week’s party should be more of the same, though a bit more work as my group here in town is hosting.

Still haven’t escaped the store, so holiday season 14 is beginning. With extra insanity, and tons of new faces. I just keep plugging away, doing my job, and applying to everything I can find in the library-sphere. The main Kent campus had a job fair recently. Really wish we were having one down here, too, like last year. But I haven’t heard anything to that affect.

Life is good. The challenges just keep me on my toes.

Tornado in November? November 21, 2013

We were supposed to have our store holiday meeting on Sunday evening, but when the tornado sirens went off at 730, I began to wonder. At 8, I got a call from the store saying not to come in. And it looks like they may not have time to reschedule, which is disappointing for all the work they put into getting ready. Ah well, the holidays come whether we’re ready or not. All the new kids seem to be getting the hang of things, so that’s good.

Had our local party in the run of November parties this past weekend as well. It was good fun – 125 people in one house. Good thing we opened up the garage and put in a ramp. New friends and old, it was a very good weekend. I’m pet sitting the next two weekends, as fleet travels to Connecticut and Indy.

Two more big assignments to go in my Foundations class. One due on Sunday – to write about the Bexley Public Library that I visited yesterday. It’s a nice place, much bigger than it looks from outside. If I’d remembered to bring a bill with me, I could have even gotten a card, instead of wandering around with a notepad pretending I was being studious or something.  Then the big research project on internet security issues in libraries, due the end of the first week of December. Almost done. Actually bought the APA book today, because we have to do APA formatting, not just citations on both of these assignments.

Alright, enough rambling, time for dinner and homework.

Had a nice quiet weekend. I wrote my association review, watched the Alien movies and the last 2/3 of season 5 of CSI. Cuddled with the puppy, occasionally nuzzled the cat, and generally just took it easy trying to get over the illness, that Saturday morning had me hacking up a lung and calling off work. Feeling much better this week, but still have a lingering tickle that results in pathetic little dry coughs throughout the day.

We had Sarah Palin in the store this week, signing her new book Good Tidings, Great Joy. It was quite the event, with private security, police and many managers visiting from others stores to help out. I didn’t get the final count, but I think it was somewhere around 350+ people that came out to see her. Which was pretty good, considering it was at noon on a Wednesday while everyone was working. All in all, it went pretty smoothly.

My homework is done for this week, just a bunch of posting was due. I really enjoyed this week’s readings. The topic was access to information, so we read about things like genealogy, the cycle of information poverty, and changing from being gate-keepers to gate-openers as librarians. And now I have vague bubbles of ideas about making a genealogical database of my family, and then trying to put it online as a database driven website. Those things may not work the way I want them to work. Also, it’s a much bigger project than I’ll have time for, but we’ll see how obsessed with it I become. 😉

This weekend will be lots of hanging out with friends, and ends with my store Holiday Meeting. Which they are doing at 9pm instead of 7am, which I appreciate so very, very much. But they’re doing a potluck… at 9pm… on a Sunday. Most people have signed up to bring snacks and desserts. I don’t think anyone really wants dinner food that late at night. And then the madness of the holiday season officially begins. It has already snowed, so the state is ready.

Also, a belated Happy Birthday to my brother, who turned 35 on Sunday.

Went to see my brother and his three kids this weekend. Sis-in-Law is out of town most of this month for a trial. So, Rich and I went up Sunday morning to let people get out of the house to help out a church. We played pool and Legos and an Angry Bird card game. Then we ordered pizza and watch a bunch of Pink Panther, and the Barbie version of The Three Musketeers. I napped most of the afternoon while the kids all played with toys and tablets. We had a great time playing the kids, they were very well behaved while Pete was out.

Monday was a shopping day for me. Nationwide decided on my settlement for the car accident, and I used my part of it to get work clothes and a new laptop so I could give the borrowed netbook back. It’s a shiny new 15.6″ Asus, this time with warranty including accidental damage.

Still no luck on the job search front for Rich. Lots of possibilities, waiting on call backs. Lots of work and hours for me, training up the new folks to help out with the heavy stuff. I really appreciated it this week. Step by step, we’re getting holiday setup going. Can hardly wait until it’s done.

This weekend friends are getting married and the Halloween parties begin. I think I will be attending four. Busy seasons.
