Quiet, Old Movies and Joomla! January 31, 2013

This past week has been very quiet for me. Relaxing and staying home for most of it. I watched some old movies I had missed – some TNG Star Trek, and some Michael Douglas films(not intentionally, he just happened to star it both of them). Even pulled up Rocky Horror for a fun evening. I did some more Joomla! work this week, as well, setting it up at the Cates Creative Design site. Drupal’s next, then actually putting content on all the pages.

It looks like my next career move will be into the university world. Seven of the eight jobs I’ve applied for so far have been at colleges here in Columbus. No positive word back from any of my applications, but it hasn’t been that long yet. Rich is in the background/references check phase, so we’re hopeful for an offer to be coming soon on his end.

Still waiting on the paperwork from unemployment, then I get to do Taxes! Yay, fun. 😉

Learning New Things January 24, 2013

Spent some time this week learning about Joomla! with a friend who was creating a new website. Read my copy of Joomla! for Dummies on the nook ereader app on my laptop. It worked alright, except for the comic at the beginning of each chapter didn’t show the bottom half, and therefore the punchline. Joomla! is interesting. I’ve got some more work to do with it before I pass final judgement, but setting up a site seems overly complicated, though, because of that, site maintenance, updating and organization seems like it will be better and more controllable than WP. Also not keen on the percentage of plugin-type things that cost money. Yet another reason to learn more programming myself.

Birthdays coming up. Aunt Terri, have a Happy Birthday on Sunday!  My nephew is early next month. Still haven’t decided what to get him. Maybe some more erector sets, or legos. I don’t know much about chapter books, and he already has all the Magic Tree House ones. Maybe A-Z Mysteries…

Had a convention this past weekend. Nice, quiet and relaxing, as it was meant to be. Went to a couple panels run by friends, didn’t heckle… I mean help, too much. Just relaxed and hung out a lot. Danced and sang a little at the party to some familiar songs. And cheered with the rest when it was announced they’d made enough money to have the convention again next year.

So Much To Do September 8, 2011

After being unmotivated last week, I’ve spent most of this week editing The Legacy of Heroes Game Master Guide. It’s been quite educational for me. Except for one stint at a very strange, but entertaining Vampire game, I’ve never had reason to read a GM’s book or a Monster book before, and this one is both in one. Really enjoying this project, and the humorous touches that Vinnie et al included in this book.

We had a nice relaxed celebration of Rich’s birthday this past weekend. A couple nice meals, some Dr Who and Torchwood. Didn’t get to go rollerblading again, due to wet weather, but we had a good time even so.

I purchased a new domain this week as well, and set up a new webhosting account with HostGator. In the coming weeks, I will be creating a portfolio there. First a demo WordPress site, then a demo Drupal site, then a demo Joomla site. After that, I’ll be studying PHP and MySQL to see what I can learn to enhance my knowledge of these systems. At some point after that, I may do a Wiki demo, too. This is not something I want to turn into a huge business, but it is something I’d like to do as one of my streams of income.

On the income note, I’ve been doing a bit of job searching, but not much, due to the large amounts of editing I left myself for this week. Next week, I’ll start putting together applications and start applying if I can find the types of jobs I want. According to my Plan, official deadline for applying to jobs is the 24th of this month.

I’ve also got a couple of story ideas floating around in my head, but they haven’t come rushing to the front quite yet. Health is doing pretty well. No major issues lately, just the usual. Life is good, and so full of opportunity and love.

Celebrating the Past and Looking Forward August 26, 2011

Lots of things going on. I didn’t post yesterday because I was taking care of a friend and getting annoyed at uncommunicative doctors. They seem to at least be organized today for her. Hopefully, they’ll finally get things figured out and fixed.

It was also my seventh anniversary with Rich yesterday. He worked all day and I felt rather ill all evening, though we did have dinner together and watch Big Bang Theory and Torchwood. We’re celebrating this weekend. Probably at the Renaissance Fair (Edit: Or not, it doesn’t open until Next weekend) and the dollar theater. I want to see the newest Pirates and X-men.

I have made two new plans, with deadlines, today as well. First one is a learning plan for myself: WordPress, Drupal and Joomla! and PHP & MySQL.  Just the basics of each, using the For Dummies for each for an overview so I can compare and contrast the first three, and see what I can pick up about the last. Then I’ll figure out what I really want to put time and effort into.  Second, is starting on the road to a better job. Updating my resume, getting it posted online and then searching for data entry jobs at companies or organizations I’d be happy working for.

It’s May, and COLD. Sunny out today, but cold rain is no fun. Supposed to be warm by now. Global warming my foot. I’ve been wrapped up in blankets all week.

So, looking forward.

I’ve started writing down everything I’m eating again, and how I feel each morning. Keep track, look for correlations and have proof to discuss with the doctor next month. Hopefully it’ll go better this month. ::Glares at the stress monsters and locks their closet door up tight::

Rich started his new job and is up to his ears in server issues. But he’s Enjoying it. So, Yay!

I’ve got more scheduled hours next week. So good there. My hands are not cooperating though, shelving is quite hard some mornings. But I’m working on it. My manager is aware, but unfortunately, this makes me first candidate for don’t come in, there’s not enough shelving to do. She’s offered to give me more zone maintenance instead, though, so that’s fun.

First major project complete. Second project is just this month – finishing a story I started, and finishing the book I’m reading.  This summer, I think is going to be computer science. I’ve gathered lots of learning links from Wikiversity, MIT’s free online course material,  Joomla references, and JSPWiki and I have a couple WordPress books. Just have to sort out and organize myself to make a plan for study. If I could go back to school and get a web design/programming degree for free, that would just be awesome. Alas, they tend to want money for that sort of thing, and a broader course of study.

Last weekend’s Penguicon party was a success – officially and everything. Just a few weeks more until MarCon madness(still need a toga). Then just over a month til Ba-Con(mmm, Bacon…). Fortunately, I’ll just be going to enjoy the latter in a mostly unofficial capacity, I think. Fun times, either way, with wonderful friends.

Things to do, stuff to clean, story to write. Time to end. Until next week.

Happy Mother’s Day!

It snowed yesterday and been cold all week. March going out like a lion, hopefully means much better weather next week. It’s Ohio, I don’t figure we’re fully out of snow season until May, but still hoping April is good and warm.

Lots of birthdays the first week of April. My Mom, and two good friends in the first four days. Happy Birthday everyone. 🙂

I was chatting with Rich today about work and how much I appreciated him working a job he hates to keep us afloat, and he commented I was doing the same thing, I just wasn’t getting hours. But that’s not true. I do like my job. I like working at the bookstore. What I don’t like is the pressure from Corporate to meet seemingly unreasonable performance goals. I know the market is tough and we have to make a profit, but ever increasing goals can become unreasonable for anyone.

Rich’s getting more interviews lately, so we’re carefully hopeful. I found a possible new place to live come June, 550 more square feet for $150 less a month. Going to check it out soon, see if it’s too good to be true, or if we’re going to apply.

I continue to fight with my body, and my diet. But I’m doing pretty well. A little Naproxen here and there is far better than what I used to do.  Just wish my elbow would behave.

Occasionally pondering starting a web design business and changing HydyPaige.com or registering another domain for a portfolio of what I can do. I really like WordPress and am pondering taking the time to learn it better and learn Joomla. One thing at a time. That might be my next big project. I work better with deadlines.

So, another month down, 9 more to go. 🙂

Do You Feel Older? July 29, 2010

That seems to be the question of the week. I have generally responded with: I’ve felt old since I was 17, I feel pretty good today. I had a wonderful birthday weekend with friends and chosen family. I didn’t see any of my blood family, but I did talk to both my parents and my brother. It was good to hear from them, too.

I ate a lot of wonderful food, both out at restaurants, and made specially for me. About half of it was healthy and good for me, about half of it was delicious anyway. 😉   My joints are getting back at me this week for it, though, so back to alkaline for me. Started the week with wheat grass juice, still tastes awful, but I’m getting better at drinking it. Inta Juice is a lovely shop and doesn’t charge nearly as much as Whole Foods used to (when they still had it).

For my birthday I got a couple books, some DVDs, some gaming dice and some clothes. Thanks go out to my parents and my in-laws for those. Knowledge, entertainment and clothing to go with the nourishment and fellowship. I also saw two movies, Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Inception. Next week, Cedar Point to top it off with a fun experiences.

Inception sent my mind whirling, partially about the topic of the movie, creating reality in dreams, but also into other types of reality creation. In parts of the movie the soundtrack/sound effects were quite blatant, and it made me think about creating with music. The moods and emotions that music invokes and the creativity it can inspire. I have always enjoyed fantasy stories where music is the medium of magic, because it is so meaningful to us and speaks to us in ways that words alone may not.

It also got me thinking about creating the reality I want to live in. Creating the life I want to have. Creating the online presence, websites, and business(es) I want to design. Mike’s getting advice for the Bookup.com website and one of the things that was said was he should fire his web designer. We both agreed with this advice and were glad that he didn’t hire me as his web designer. I don’t have the skills for that, we both know that, but they are skills I want to gain. At the moment I am more like his web programmer, he tells me what he wants and I make it happen. We both need advice and guidance in the design category. I am very grateful that this coach has some ideas in this area.

There are so many things I want to do, all spinning about my head. I want to learn WordPress, learn how to make custom Themes, create a website offering both these Themes and tips and tricks and advice for WordPress in general. I have a lot of WordPress references, books, websites, personal advice, that I would like to collect all in one place, for myself at the very least.

Next step, is a curiosity about Joomla. What it can do. What I can do with it. I have started gathering reference material, but I think WordPress first, it seems an easier thing to learn.

I also have writing projects, Traffic Ultimatum, Four Hour Work Week, affiliates, a gaming carry-all and getting out of Barnes & Noble running around in my head. Not to mention my simple weekly blogging, the growing stack of books I want to read, investing, and medical bills. Life is crazy, fun, wonderful, exciting and full of so many opportunities. I have My Next Thirty Years by Tim McGraw running through my head lately. They will definitely be the best years of my life.
