Living Room w/ Boxes

So, most of my apartment is now packed, and going to stay that way until I move in two weeks. I still have a bedroom and bathroom, and the minimum of needed things in my kitchen, but everything else is packed. At least repeated visits by pest control motivated me to pack early? I stopped by my soon-to-be rental office to see my new place yesterday, and still have to wait a couple days, but also ended up moving my lease signing date up by a day, as they are closing early on the day I intended to sign.

Over the weekend, I set up a WAMPServer on my laptop, install Drupal on said server, and got all the way through Drupal for Dummies, having to adjust for the several years, and therefore versions, since the book had been printed. The point of this was to start working on a genealogical site for all the research I’ve been doing, but not to have it on the internet before it’s complete. So, the intent is to get it all organized and the database filled before it goes anywhere near live online. So far, so good, though the newest version looks far more like WordPress than previous iterations, so I may just end up hand-coding anyway. We shall see.

I also finished listening to What If? and got all the way through Shepard’s Crown, the final book written by Terry Pratchett before he passed into the next world in 2015. The Nac Mac Feegles of his books inspired me to write a silly short story I called Fairy Wishes. I also finished Self-Inflicted Wounds – Heartwarming Tales of Humiliation by Aisha Tyler, on Rich’s recommendation, this afternoon. On the reading front, I’ve recently been trying my brain at Graphic Novels. So, I’ve read Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, Book 1, and Y – The Last Man, books 1 and 2.

Upcoming plans – still hoping, but not betting, on going to the Ren Faire, getting some tech help next week to fix/upgrade my computers, lots of moving of things.

The IFLA tour went well, we got lots of complements on our branch. Our management team survived long days at the conference. We’re getting into the swing of the school year, our Homework Help Center is already going strong. And our new branches are well on their way towards opening.

The moving everything into the center of every room for Pest Control was very interesting. Packed all my pewter, and two rows of books in the living room. Discovered hidden things in my kitchen in a cupboard I didn’t know I was using (too high to be useful for me). Emptied my bedroom closet shelf into suitcases, where those things will stay until after the move. Emptied my office closet, most of that went back in Tuesday. Cleaned up the bathroom a bit more, and bagged up everything in my medicine cabinets. I guess it went well, I haven’t seen any more bugs in the outside hall.

More excitement, last night, however. Rain started pouring into my office through a couple of holes in the ?head?board? of the window. Two, full power streams of water just falling down onto the sill. It’s not a place one normally looks on windows, but when I checked, all of mine have three or so such holes, that I don’t recall ever seeing before. I am assured this was not done on Monday, but must have been there before. I’ve never had rain stream into my apartment in the three years I’ve been here, though. They’ve put in a work order to check it out and fix it up. This can’t be good for the walls… Meantime, I have to wastebaskets sitting below the sill, surrounded by towels. Good thing I was awake during the storm last night.

I finished up Hat Full of Sky, and then Audible was having a Two-for-One sale, so I got Felicia Day’s You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) and Neil Gaiman’s Trigger Warnings.  The first, I loved, and was inspired by. She’s so young, you might say, why has she written a memoir already? At the time at the end of the memoir, she has just finished some major things in her life, including a lot of introspection and healing, and is unsure, but energized about what might come next. It’s a very heartwarming, funny, and crazy tale of a geeky, hippy-homeschooled, southern girl who chased her passion, and which encourages the reader/listener to do the same.

The second, I’m only a little way into. Other than Good Omens with Terry Pratchett, I’ve never tackled any of his novels, only his short fiction. Fragile Things left me confused and disturbed, and pretty sure I shouldn’t try the longer stuff. So, when this new collection popped up, I figured I could manage more of his short fiction. The introductory section was very interesting to me. He discussed why he wrote each of the stories in this book. Including a story about Ray Bradbury taking time out of his day to talk to a young boy who wanted to be a writer. As with most writers, the advice was to Write, Every Day, even when you don’t want to. Also a good reminder to this astray writer.

So, I’ve packed up my TV early, and set some goals. To find my passions again, to do the work, and stop staring at Netflix with my precious free time. I’ve got a lot do do before and during the move, but in those quiet moments, I need to feed myself, my soul, my heart.

Olympic Weekend August 18, 2016

Spent most of the weekend with my parents watching the Olympic Games in their Air Conditioned hotel room. Yay, A/C. It was fun, I remember watching the olympics and other sports with them when I was growing up, it was a good time together. Hope my nieces are having wonderful birthdays, yesterday and today. 🙂

Work is going along. I did a lot of book-finding today at CML. We had our first official IFLA tour yesterday, and the Big One tomorrow. I’m nearly to 200 books cataloged on the new collection over at Sprawl. Lots of Science Fiction Book Club editions, and lots more signed editions. It’s very fun.

I finished Memnoch the Devil, and got through Allegiant. Now, I’m on Hat Full of Sky by Pratchett. I think, thus far, I’ve managed to listen to this series exactly backward. Ah well, it’s kind of interesting that way. Like delving into history.

The rental company has decided to do full-building pest control on Monday, one month before I move. So, I’ve got lots of early packing to do this weekend. Weee, fun! 😉

I am moving apartments on Saturday morning. I’ve got a friend with a truck and brand new trailer, and a couple other friends with big vehicles coming to help. I keep checking the weather forecast, but it keeps changing. One day it says 90, the next 80, and back again. My bookshelves are all cleared and packed. Except for my computer, my desk and files are all packed. My pewter, antiques and china are all packed. Tonight’s agenda is the kitchen and the rest of the closets. (I figure the dresser drawers are nicely packed, just take them out, move the big pieces and put them back in.) I should really take apart the modular bookcase, but it’s such a pain to disassemble and reassemble them. (No, disassemble!)

I still don’t have my AT&T modem(I mean, Gateway), but it currently seems like it should arrive today (UPS tends to show up around 6pm here). The tech I talked to earlier this week said there’s no wiring needed, I should be able to set up the internet on Saturday. I’ve still got internet here until next Thursday (providing They don’t disconnect me early, Again.) And all the other utilities are all set to go on and off properly. Email with address and details will be going out some time next week. I still have to decide what I’m doing about package delivery at the new place as it requires a key to get in the building, and the mailboxes are tiny. I’m not starting mail forwarding until the end of next week, as I’ll be here cleaning after work most days next week.

Birthdays next week. Happy Birthday to all my fellow end-of-July birthdays! I’ve got Cedar Point on Monday, and a lot of nebulous, not really formed plans the rest of the week. Working 7am-3pm Tuesday through Friday puts a damper on going out and partying mid-week, but maybe I’ll figure something out for Friday night and/or Saturday. Suggestions welcome! 😉

The apartment is nearly unpacked. The gaming book is getting closer to print. I’ve almost got the information I need to fix the website. My birthday is just over a week away. I’m on book five of seven. And the possibility of being a librarian that I thought was completely shot, has a dim light reappearing. Things are moving along nicely.

Pictures of the apartment:

The living room.

The back of the living room, note how the bookcases are accessible. 😉
And the desks fill out the wall to the left.

And our library upstairs, soon to have a papasan for more comfortable curling up.

Life is good and another cookout with friends this weekend to boot. 🙂

Um, yeah, that’s pretty much been my life this past week. Getting ready for the move on Saturday. Boxes, boxes everywhere. I took down the bookcases today. Somehow my 7/16s ratchet disappeared. Got a new one, all better. Truck rented so it can all be made in one trip. Friends recruited so we don’t break ourselves. And a schedule ready to get things done. Now, just the last minute things and the kitchen tomorrow and all is set to go. 🙂

Then I get to spend a few days Cleaning. Yes, my life is quite exciting in the day time. At least my evenings are filled with friends and loved ones.
Oh, and Angry Birds. I still can’t get three stars on lvl 2-12, but at least it plays a lot easier in the Google Chrome browser.

Still Packing June 16, 2011

Office is fully packed Including the junk closet. Bathroom is half packed and the bedroom has a couple boxes out of it. Some stuff has been thrown out, some has been donated, some sold for a pittance. A bag of donation clothes is forming in the hallway as well. My note about getting someone to cover my shift is gone, so I’ll call a couple possibles tomorrow. Hours are good, but getting the keys before everyone is sitting around waiting with a truck full of stuff would be better. People have donated tons of boxes, I think I might have enough at this point. We’ll see. Excited for the move, but still a lot to do.

Lovely picnic with friends this weekend. Smoked brisket and pulled pork and a deep fried turkey. Delicious. And the weather was nice this year. I even managed not to get a sunburn.

Father’s day is coming up. Thank you, Dad, for always being there and being understanding.

Oh! Went to the doc, got back on Plaquenil and Naproxen. She was impressed, but we’re gonna try to get me up that last little bit to great.

So much to do, I can’t stay focused to write much more. I don’t think next week is going to be any better. 😉

I finished step one of packing today – the books. It took 45 boxes this time. Some small, but still heavy, some a little too big, and very heavy. The DVDs, VHS and video games are almost all packed, too. Just a few stragglers left. The pewter is all packed, except for the thimble, stubbornly hiding in a tower crenelation. Office stuff and knickknacks are next on the list. I’ve got some really big boxes for bedroom and kitchen stuff, but have nearly run out of smaller boxes for “other” again. We’re probably going to get storage tubs in the next couple days for the stuff that’s going to go into the basement of the new place. That’ll free up some boxes if I repack into them a bit. Still working out the final  logistics of the day – trucks/vans, volunteers, getting the lease signed, and the keys in hand. I may have to ask someone to take my shift that morning. Need to find out when the leasing office opens. I know they have limited Showing hours on the weekend.

What else is new? I’m going to start working on a friend’s website next week. Officially, paid and everything. I’ve been waiting on this job for months. Must fix the mess the last person she hired made. Yes, I’ll link to it after it’s pretty and working properly.

Registering for BaCon tonight. Bacon and Gaming convention put together by friends. Should be a fun time. Haven’t actually gamed at a convention in years. Gotta get back to WarpCon some day, too. Hmm, passports. Really gotta get those soon.

Much to do. 🙂

Toga party went really well on Friday. I’m still waiting on pictures of my outfit. We had a nice big crowd both nights. The dance contest was a success as well, with three great contestants. Not sure if chaos twister ever happened, but the drinks were tasty, the music good and everyone had a wonderful time. We had a huge crew there, and pack in, setups and pack out all went quickly and smoothly. Our Bob’s, however, was all boarded up, but IHOP took very good care of us instead.

It’s June now, time to buckle down and get packing. I’ve made a list of all the places I need to change our address with. It’s a pretty huge list. Mom brought me a bunch of boxes, and we’re gonna need tons more.Yay for B&N and liquor stores. I think all the boxes we had two years ago went out to friends. If anyone still has some, donations are welcome.

I’ve started an official event for the move an invited lots of people to come help. Naturally when I went to work today, for the first time since the holidays, they had the schedule posted a month out and I’m working 7-11 that morning. Ah well, they can lift heavy furniture without me. 😉  I’ll be home in time for the boxes.

After the move, I think, I’m actually going to take the time to put stuff up on eBay. Before we move would be ideal, but I don’t think that I’m going to have the time. June project – Moving. July project – Ebay. Probably won’t get started on my computer studies until that’s all taken care of. Maybe I can work on designing my course of study during this time when I get tired of packing, moving, unpacking, selling and mailing.

Spring Rains April 29, 2011

The weather has been crazy. Rain and wind and storming all over the place. Massive damage down south, but only minor damage around here. I love spring storms. Listening to them, walking in them, reveling in them. I missed them so much when I lived in Boise. Something about washing away the dullness of winter and bringing everything back to life again. It fills me with happiness and energy. And, as noted last week, the spring cleaning bug.

I always use cleaning to procrastinate, but in spring, it gets crazy. Cleaning closets and emptying drawers, getting rid of the old to make space for the new. When money allows, buying new – new clothes is an odd new fad for me. Hurray for Ohio Thrift end of the month sales. Still ought to get a new pair of work pants. I’ve also got the moving bug this year, I want more space. So, I look around and think packing on top of cleaning.

A quiet week for me. Relaxing and writing cleaning. Exciting things coming up, though. Conventions and a wedding. Rich starts his new job officially on Monday. A regular schedule again at last.

Cleaning beckons, and I’m away.
