Sorry for the late post, I fell asleep for three hours when I got home yesterday. I had a great visit with Mom last week. We watched a couple movies and did our usual shopping. We watched The Butler on the new TV and went out to see The Jungle Book in the theater. Both very good, in their own ways. She got me early birthday presents this year of short sleeved work shirts (I’ve never been warm at work before…) and a new TV and stand to put it on. (I had to go buy a screwdriver to put it together, I don’t know What happened to the phillips-head I used to have.) She also brought me down her old Wii that she no longer uses with WiiFit, WiiPlay, andWiiSports to boot, as well as Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader. I’ve set it up with the TV, but I haven’t played any of them yet.

Third week at work this week, and first payday. I’m getting all the little bits down now. Still proving I can shelve the way they do, but we’re getting really busy with the kids out of school. Today, I hope to learn how to do a little bit more with their computer systems on the floor (signing in patrons and helping them send print jobs), so I can actually help when I’m out shelving and they ask me questions. Remember, this summer, Everyone can get in on the Summer Reading program at your local branch.

Tomorrow is our Picnic on the Lawn with my Fleet family. Looking forward to spending time with them, relaxing and eating delicious food. I’m still waiting on the last book in the trilogy I was working on, so I spent this month’s credit on Wizard’s First Rule, to have someone else read Goodkind to me.

First week on the phones. Day one: WHY won’t the phone Stop Ringing??? Day two: This isn’t as bad as yesterday… Day three: I think I’m getting the hang of this… Day four: Did I do that right? I think I did…  And now it’s my weekend. First week completed without meltdown. Learning new things, and figuring out my mistakes, and being glad I made flashcards for a few processes.

At gaming we finished one adventure and dipped our toes into the next D&D campaign, as we were missing half our players. It was good fun. I see all kinds of awesome trouble brewing.  Finished Methuselah’s Children. Moon is a Harsh Mistress has a waiting list at the library, so I’m on to Time Enough for Love in the meantime. This one’s been a bit trickier, as it goes into long passages about genetics, and the narrator changes without warning quite often, though this is noted by a voice tone change, which helps, but is still confusing. Lazarus is still wonderful, though.

I spent the last weekend working on a To Do list, including a bit of tax refund shopping for clothes and a couple needful kitchen things, as well as a new lapdesk big enough for my laptop + mouse. I also finally cleaned out my “Donate This” corner. I actually managed to get everything done on it, except for finding a new pair of jeans.  This weekend is for putting together a stellar job application for OHC, and relaxing.

Spent the weekend with my family. Saturday was the girls’ birthday party. We had make-your-own soft tacos for lunch, and cake and ice cream for dessert. The cake had Ariel on it, both the girls’ names and candles for each of them to blow out. They got lots of toys and books, and had a great time putting things together and trying them out. Adorable as always, we had a great afternoon with my brother’s family, my parents, Jen’s parents, and my aunt and uncle.

Sunday, my parents and aunt and uncle (and dogs) came down for a picnic in a “nearby” park. The map made it look much closer than it really was, but we found it eventually. The pups had a nice run with the big dogs in the huge dog park. Then we went to a picnic area for lunch of salads and sandwiches. A short walk around a nearby pond finished out our afternoon in the sun.

Mom and I did some grocery shopping, and then went to see Star Trek Into Darkness at the dollar theater. Monday, we did some household and shoe shopping, then took Dad to Red Lobster. He and I spent the afternoon telling stories on the couch while Mom napped. Then one final meal before they headed back to the hotel.

It was a good visit.

Now, I’m eager for school to start on Monday. My professors have started posting welcome messages, but they are holding off on the syllabus posting until Monday. I did finally get a name for my tools for success class, a PhD candidate at KSU. Just a few more days to go! 🙂

Had a great time with Mom this past weekend. We ate a lot and shopped a lot and watched a lot of movies. We discovered Redbox movie rental when the dollar theater failed us (no longer showing the movies I wanted to share with her). Friday we had Red Lobster and Roosters, went grocery shopping, got my car’s oil changed and serpentine belt replaced, and watched Les Miserables and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Saturday we went to the spa and had massages and mani/pedis, and ate catered Panera for lunch. We went shopping for jeans and shoes, went to Olive Garden for dinner and then watched Skyfall in the evening. Sunday we went to church in the morning and then headed to Easton to see Oz the Great and Powerful. While watching the previews, Mom discovered that there was a Star Trek reboot, so that evening we watched the new Star Trek movie, while polishing off the leftovers from the weekend. We also watched Bourne Legacy while she made me lots of Chex Mix in the afternoon.

Monday morning we went off to my new eye doctor, Dr. Suh, and ordered new glasses, with a slightly stronger left lens. They gave me a grid to put on my fridge to check for macular degeneration (I don’t think the assistant believes I’ll come back next year, as it had been 8 since my Last appointment with an eye doc).  Then we had breakfast at First Watch (mmm delicous waffles). After breakfast, we did a little bit of shopping, during which we discovered that at Whole Foods, you can buy cinnamon sticks in bulk for $6.99/lb instead of in a jar for $4-$5/oz. Back home to have some leftover Cheddar Bay biscuits for lunch and Mom headed off to see my brother. All in all, and excellent weekend with Mom.

Final Run-up to Christmas December 20, 2012

We are in the midst of the final week before Christmas, and everyone is out shopping. The store is busy and we are scrambling to keep the shelves stocked. Distribution is already sending us books for January, of course, but we’re just trying to make it through December. Different nook deals every couple of days, and coupons all over the place. It finally feels like Christmas this week.

I only have two more work days left before Christmas. Then Sunday we are visiting Friends. My brother’s family on Monday, with Skype for Mom & Dad. Tuesday we’re having a day to ourselves to celebrate, watch Django, and puppy-sit.  Still haven’t decided on our Christmas Dinner.

My joints are a bit more achy lately with the stress of the holiday season, and the trying to save meds for when I need them until Rich gets hired again. (Also, by being too lazy to remember to take them every day.) But it’s only really bad when I have to lift the heavy boxes or break down empties. Unfortunately, that tends to be what they like me to do lately. Ah well.

So, Merry Christmas, everyone! And enjoy All the holidays this month. 🙂

28 Steps and a New Pair of Shoes January 5, 2012

So, the escalators have been down all week at work. There are 28 steps between the first floor and the second floor, I counted on about the tenth trip up. Down isn’t bad at all, but working the information desk all week has put me up those steps so many times. Though our General Manager has a point, our butts will be nice and toned by the time they’re fixed.

Unfortunately, to make matters worse, I also did a rush job of buying new shoes on Monday. And got shoes that squeeze my feet just below the toes. I have to take them back, but until then, I’m working with numb pinkie toes and some serious discomfort in my left foot. Lessons learned… even if I don’t like shoe shopping, I should take more time to do it.

Had a good New Year’s Eve partying with friends and then have a nice relaxed evening on New Year’s Day with some same and some other friends. 2012 is starting out well, with plans not only being made, but set into motion. As with every year, we are determined to make this one better than the last.

Struggling to eat properly. It’s winter and I want warm comfort food, not raw salads. Fresh veggies to cook are also harder to find in good quality. I need new and exciting recipes or something. Hours are going to start dropping at the store soon, so that might give me more time to make proper food choices.

I was trying to figure out what I’ve done in the last week worth posting about, and coming up pretty empty. Friends have had good things. One had a baby last week and is now home enjoying the addition to the family. One got a job she was after, raise and all. Another found out the job she wants hasn’t passed her by, they just haven’t started interviewing yet.  Another friend got a job offer he had been waiting and negotiating for. The holiday season is bringing early gifts to a lot of people this year.

The Game Master’s Guide of The Legacy of Heroes came out this week. I helped with the play testing and editing of this book as well as the Player’s Guide. So we’re excited about that release.

I’ve done some of our holiday shopping. Still haven’t heard from my brother yet, but got the hula hoops Mom wanted. Have other gifts planned, but not purchased, and others I haven’t even begun to figure out yet. And, it seems to be the year for it, no idea when the family Christmas is going to be. 🙂

My elbow was driving me crazy today, but all in all, I’m doing pretty well lately. Taking my meds, eating fairly well. I’ve had headaches all week, but that’s another matter entirely. If I can just figure out how to get my wrist and elbow back to good shape, all would be well with my body.

Somehow this one only got saved as a draft on December 9th instead of posted… So here’s that week’s post, and I’m working on this week’s….

It has been snowing and cold for the last week. Really cold. Below freezing most of the time cold. The snow has not been much around here. Dustings, really. But enough that people have had their usual bout with learning how to driving in snow for the year. Not that they will get a whole lot better, but at least they’ve had a reminder. My front lawn was half snow dusted, half still green in the bright shining sun today. It actually looked pretty neat.

Not a lot going on. Christmas shopping for the nieces and nephew complete. Schedule for when we get to deliver them still up in the air. Plans for our Christmas dinner and movie still incomplete as well. Just biding our time and trying not to let the year speed to a finish quite yet.

I got my copies of Daily Bites of Flesh yesterday. My first story published in a real bound book. So, that’s pretty cool.

Lots of hours at the store this month, so that’s good, but leaves me tired with all the early mornings. Hopefully I’ll have something more interesting to say next week.

Published again! My flash fiction piece, Dead Eyes, has been published in a 365 story vampire anthology called Daily Bites of Flesh, by Pill Hill Press.  The anthology should hit Amazon and B&N.com soon.

Hours at the story ramp up as do the holiday sales and shoppers. I really enjoyed getting to work through the games backstock today. Such a geek, but I like making things organized and neat. Pained me a bit to not get to finish cleaning up the receiving shelves, but got a lot of product out onto the floor.

Bookup.com had a great weekend/Black Friday sale. Many CDs and DVDs are being shipped out this week.

I can start applying for jobs on Elance again on Sunday. I have been studying up for my next skills test, only to find that there’s a New edition to the Chicago Manual of Style that I did not know had come out. It’s pale blue, which I find a little bit creepy. Not sure why I like the bright orange better, but I do. They have updated for modern technology and usage according to the jacket cover.

It is December already, the year is almost over. So much done and so much yet to do. Up next, Christmas shopping!
